Review of the best Travel Steamers – 2020

If you are like me, you travel…a lot. And you don’t just Travel for holiday, you may also travel for business. I know I travel for business a lot and clothes certainly matter when you are in a meeting in far flung locations. So being looking sharp is important, and one of the best ways to fail that is with wrinkles. So packing a garment steamer is important. But you don’t want just any one…so we go and try to find the best travel steamer for your travel needs.

Criteria

In any purchase, determining what is most important for you is essential in picking the right devices. For these types of Travel Steamers, I tend to focus on the following criteria when trying to find the best one for myself. Do you have any others that you use in your purchase decision?

Size & Weight

You can get steamers that are far from travel size. Ones that you cart around your house. But overall size and weight are big factors when taking something in your suitcase or carry-on. I tend to look at ones that have a portable size but still produce results on your garments.

Water Capacity

If you can’t get much use out of a steamer without having to constantly refill, you’ll probably never actually use the darn thing. But lets be reasonable, you are not going to get a lot out of a travel steamer, but you should get the best possible for your size and needs.

Durability

Travel is hard on your body and all your equipment too. So for me, I need something that is going to hold up for the type of travel I tend to do. I prefer things that will take a beating and have as few parts that can snag or break as possible.

Price

Always an important factor. Determining how important this is will be based on your individual budget. However, as the saying goes “I’m Not Rich Enough to Buy Cheap Things.”  Sometimes saving a few dollars will cost you more in the long run if it falls apart quickly. In my case, it’s important but certainly not the most important criteria.

Rowenta Xcel Steam Travel DR7051 Hand-Held Garment Steamer

I’ve always loved the brand Rowenta. They are one of my favorite for a lot of different home items such as irons. Like all the best travel products this one is dual-voltage so you won’t have to worry about it burning out on foreign travel. It’s high wattage and heats up fast. I’m not a huge fan of the purple color but maybe its your thing!

Pros

  • Dual Voltage
  • 45 second heat-up time
  • 1100 Watts

Cons

  • Not as compact as other options
  • I’m not a huge fan of the color option here (silly personal preference)
  • Only a 5oz water reservoir
  • Definitely pricier than some of the comparable “no-name” options

Conair 450 Watt Dual Voltage Garment Steamer

This is another brand I am definitely familiar with but always for hair dryers. But then again maybe they really know heat. So I was hopeful but a bit skeptical in terms of their ability to deliver in garment steaming. Overall though I find it to be a pretty reasonable option especially given the price and durability. It’s not my favorite though but for the price and options it still does make a reasonable solution.

Pros

  • Dual-voltage
  • Lasts for about 10 minutes in terms of steam time
  • Lower cost than a lot of the other options

Cons

  • A bit bulkier than it seems like it should be
  • Doesn’t seem to heat up as well as some other options
  • There seems to be some complaints about quality (although didn’t experience this). Recommend testing a few times before travel.

iSteam By Exagora Steamer

I’ll admit that I hadn’t heard about this steamer previously, but it seemed to have a good size / price for what it is. Overall it’s a reasonable option for travel but certainly not the top in my book. It has some quality issues it seems overall and I think it wouldn’t last in the long run. However in terms of price and such it seems to fall pretty well into the category of low cost and portable.

Pros

    • Dual-voltage
    • Heats within 60seconds
    • Good overall cost
  • 10 minutes of steaming

Cons

  • Higher wattage options available elsewhere
  • Not as powerful steaming as other options
  • Can sometimes spurt out hot water instead of steam

Beautural Steamer for Clothes

This is definitely one of the better built as well as bigger travel steamers on the market. Overall its a good value for what it is but I found that it is not really the one that works best for me. If you are a US domestic only traveler it would be a good option to consider but if you plan to do more international travel than its lack of dual-voltage is disappointing. Overall though for the value and the quality and the features its a good priced option for those who’s needs it meets.

Pros

  • High wattage, Fast Heating
  • Larger than average water reservoir
  • Great Cost to Value
  • 15 minutes of steaming

Cons

  • Not Dual Voltage
  • Not as portable as I would like
  • Seriously, why is it not dual voltage?

PureSteam Portable Fabric Steamer

Another steamer and another brand that I was originally not familiar with. This was by far not my favorite option among the choices, however it was definitely one of the more affordable. But what good is affordable if you don’t love it? I suppose it all depends on what you want to use it for. If you are looking for something that will run occasionally on some trips and you don’t want to spend much money, this might work. But I feel there are better choices in comparison.

Pros

  • One of the lower cost options
  • 10 minutes of steaming

Cons

  • Slower heat-up than other options
  • Not Dual Voltage
  • Not as portable as I would like

So have you tested out any steamers? Do you have any opinions or other choices you would recommend (or want to read about?). Let us know! Among the ones, my favorite is the one from Rowenta. Maybe I’m biased since I own several products from the company, but that’s because I’ve had good experiences with them. Let us know below your experiences!
