Chester Great Britain England

Chester Great Britain England (6/9/2016)

Beautiful Chester -
 Great Britain
Loaded with beautifully preserved Tudor and Victorian buildings, Chester is an English GEM!

Chester was first built way back in 70AD by the Romans because of its strategic military value and continued on by Normans, Saxons, and others. With Chester’s rebirth in the 18th and 19thcenturies, the city’s past has been beautifully preserved and makes for a memorable visit. Also, Chester has wonderful restaurants.

The Rows & Clock -
Chester, Great Britain
We liked beautiful The Rows in the center of Chester’s old town that date back to the 13th century. These picturesque two-level arcades featuring unique shopping and restaurants radiate in four directions from Central Cross. The architecture is wonderful with photo-perfect view everywhere you turn. Don’t miss the beautiful Clock on Foregate Street.

When you are ready to ‘fancy a pint’ or ready for lunch, we enjoyed the Victoria Pub on Watergate Street next to the Central Cross (center of The Rows).

Chester Cathedral -
Chester, Great Britain
Chester Cathedral and grounds are not to be missed. Sections of the Cathedral date back over 800 years. In order to get a good orientation of Chester’s old town, you can walk around the 2 miles of City Walls that were built by the Romans 2,000 years ago and finished by the Saxons in the 12thcentury.

River Dee -
Chester, Great Britain
Travel tip: Here are some things we enjoyed doing in Cheater... We enjoyed the Roman artifacts and the preserved Georgian house in the Grosvenor Museum (no charge) on Grosvenor Street. Having some ice cream sitting along the River Dee just outside Chester’s city walls is very nice. Located just outside of the city walls, fans of everything Roman will not want to miss Chester’s Roman Amphitheatre – the largest one in Great Britain. The boat rides were not recommended with people saying they were somewhat boring.

Stone Villa
Chester, Great Britain
Map of England
We enjoyed staying at the Stone Villa for a touch of luxury in Chester - voted the #1 Bed & Breakfast in Chester. The owners were easy to talk to and full of good advise for making our visit to Chester and the surrounding area a very enjoyable one. The rooms have been remodeled and furnished beautifully. Breakfast in the morning was lovely in a nice setting. We were able to walk into the main part of Chester’s old town in about 15 minutes with some of that walk along attractive Brook Street on the way in. Parking was easy with private parking on site. Nice restaurants are within a few minutes walk. We liked the Sticky Walnut restaurant around the corner.

Travel tip: Chester makes for a wonderful stop when driving between the Cotwolds and the Lake District when touring England.

Important driving tip: Because many of the roads in England are smaller country roads with many confusing roundabouts, getting lost is not hard. In fact, it can be fun if you can get back on track.

Here is a wonderful tip... Make sure your rental car has GPS and ask for a lesson in its use at your rental car company. The postal code in Great Britain typically has enough information to direct you to your hotel or destination. So, look up postal codes for your hotels and destinations so you can enter them in as you go through your day of explorations. We used a centrally located church or hotel for the villages. Sometimes the GPS asks to confirm the street name and number, so also having an address helps. Also, often just putting in the town/village name will take you to the right direction and you can follow signs to the town center.
