Flying Elephants

There are often cases of flying Elephants, when elephants need to be transported from one zoo to another or from one country to another, they are often transported by air.

The Dangers

The dangers of transporting elephants on aircraft is quite obvious. It has been well documented that while transporting these gigantic and majestic animals, it is mostly necessary to do it while the animals are awake. This leads to the possibility of a panic attack from the animal. It is quite plausible that a full size elephant panicking and thrashing around on an aircraft could bring the plane down. It leads to the possibility of an immediate euthanize by an on-board veterinary. This is of course detrimental to all involved.

The Best Way

The best way is often to transport these animals when they are still young and still not fully grown. In January of 2012 an entire herd of African Elephants were successfully transported. The orphaned herd of 9 elephants were transported on a Boeing 777 from Namibia to Mexico. It should be noted that the trip from the Southern African country to North America is not a short journey. Yet, under the constant eye of veterinary professionals the transport was carried out without a glitch. LAN was the carrier and according to LAN they have transported Giraffe, Dolphin, Bees and Horses. Horses is a common animal to be transported but LAN are reported to have once carried 45 horses in a single flight.

The 9 elephants transported by LAN is known to be as the largest by air shipment of African Elephants.

African Elephants are typically much larger than Asian elephants. Elephants provide massive attractions at African themes Safari’s and parks all over the world. This is making it more and more common for these recreational safari and park owners to investigate the possibility of transporting elephants by air.
