One of the four major golf championships, many consider the Masters THE premier golf event.  Founded in 1934, it is played each year at the world-famous Augusta National Golf Club.  The tournament awards a trophy to the winner, but it’s the famous Masters Green Jacket that truly signifies the champion of this tournament.  However, the winner is only allowed to keep the jacket for one year before returning it to the club (one can only hope it’s dry-cleaned between winners).

The green jacket which looks like it dates back to the tournament’s founding, was introduced in 1937 to denote membership in the ultra-exclusive Augusta National Golf Club.  It made its debut at the Masters Tournament in 1949 and lucky winners have been posing as leprechauns ever since.

Tickets

Tickets to the Masters are not easy to come by and require luck and deep pockets. Tickets to practice days are much easier to obtain than tournament badges, but still require good fortune of both the chance and money kind.  In 2012, Augusta National Golf Club began making a limited number of tickets available via an online lottery.  For the rest, it’s ticket brokers, eBay, scalpers and connections.

Schedule

The Masters Tournament always begins on a Monday with three days of practice rounds.

Tuesday night of tournament week, the Champions Dinner is held to welcome the previous year’s winner to the club. The honoree gets to select the menu – as well as foot the bill.  A dubious award.

Wednesday the Par-3 Contest is held, a tradition that began in 1960.  No golfer has ever won the Par-3 Contest and The Masters in the same year, leading many to refer to winning the Par-3 Contest as “the Masters Jinx.”

Rounds 1 and 2 are played Thursday and Friday, respectively, and affords viewers the opportunity to see all the golfers in the field before cuts are made.

Saturday is Round 3 and Sunday Round 4, followed by the Awards Ceremony along with the presentation of the snazzy Green Jacket.

2018

Masters Champion Patrick Reed won $1.98 million

Second-Place Finisher Rickie Fowler won $1.118 million

Third-Place Finisher Jordan Spieth won $748,000

The next 21 finishers won a MINIMUM of $100k.

The closest commercial airport to Augusta, Georgia where the Masters Tournament is held is Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International (ATL).  This airport is not only a 2.5 hour drive from Augusta National Golf Club, but it has long held the record as the busiest airport in the U.S.
