SXSW Then and Now

Organized as a regional music Festival in 1987, the first South by Southwest event had an expected attendance of 150.  Over 700 people showed up.

Since then Sxsw has continued to grow, both in size and scope.  Referred to simply as South By, the festival has evolved into a ten-day, multi-disciplinary event that saw a record 161,000 attendees swarm Austin last year.

2019 SXSW Programming

There are four overlapping programs to this year’s event:

SXSW Interactive Festival, March 8-12

Focused on emerging technology, SXSW Interactive Festival is a showcase and celebration of creative technologies and the importance of thinking differently.

This year’s program is packed with outstanding cross-industry speakers.  Highlights include: Meg Whitman, Jeffery Katzenberg, Elizabeth Moss, Brandi Carlile, Gwyneth Paltrow, Henry Winkler, Joe Pompeo, Soledad O’Brien, Jodie Foster, Tim Ferris, David Byrne and Trevor Noah.

SXSW Film Festival, March 8-16

While celebrity speakers are a staple of the SXSW Film Festival, the event also highlights independent films and emerging talent from both behind and in front of the camera.

Providing star power to the headliner program this year is The Beach Bum, a subversive new comedy from director Harmony Korine (Kids, Spring Breakers).  Starring Matthew McConaughey as Moondog, a rebel living life by his own rules (is this an biopic?!), the film follows his follies along with a supporting cast that includes Snoop Dogg, Zac Efron, and Isla Fisher.

SXSW Music Festival, March 11-17

Where it all began, the SXSW Music Festival brings together artists, industry professionals and fans from all over the world to collaborate and showcase the latest wave of musical talent.

There are a 2000-plus official performers scheduled for 2019, representing more than 60 countries, with performances taking place in bars, clubs, parks, churches and hotels around downtown Austin.

SXSW Comedy Festival, March 8-16

The newest division launched in 2008, the SXSW Comedy Festival has grown from a one-night celebration to a week-long showcase of both established and emerging talent.

Featuring stand-up, improv performances and podcast recordings, the 2019 lineup includes a sit-down with Kathy Griffin and a showcase from Comedy Central’s The Daily Show.

Getting to SXSW

Make your trip to SXSW truly exceptional by traveling to Austin by private charter. It’s the quickest way in and out of the city and allows you to bypass the crowds that will be descending upon the city.

Two airports welcome private charters to Austin.  About 5 miles southeast of Downtown Austin,  Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (KAUS) is the main airport for both commercial and private flights.  Domestic private charters can also use Austin Executive Airport (KEDC), 12 miles northeast of Austin’s central business district.
