2019 Geneva International Motor Show

Thursday, March 7 – Sunday, March 17, 2019 First held in 1905, the International Geneva Motor Show has born witness to the evolution of the automobile.  The beginning of the 20th Century saw cars progress from benzene- and steam-powered into the internal combustion engine that currently dominates the market.  With the growing concern over the impact of fossil fuels on the environment, the 2019 Geneva Motor Show unsurprisingly has significant focus on electric- and alternative-powered models that look to replace the combustion engine. Two long-dead auto brands will attempt resurrection at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show by going electric: Lagonda and Hispano Suiza.

1937 Lagonda LG 45

Purchased by Aston Martin in 1947, the Lagonda marque is revived about once a decade with a concept car or limited production. This evolution of the brand is a battery-powered SUV dubbed the Lagonda All-Terrain Concept.  Set to go into production in 2021, don’t be surprised if you never lay eyes on it. Lagonda’s last production model, Lagonda Taraf, came with a million-dollar-plus price tag, which may explain why only 120 cars were produced.

1925 Hispano Suiza

Hispano Suiza holds the distinction of producing one of the very first electric cars back in 1900, about a century before going electric became chic. Sadly for Mother Earth, the car was just a prototype and never went into production and the company followed trend and switched to gas-powered models.  This year’s show will debut The Carmen, expected to be a blend of old-world glamour and the latest in technical development.

The Geneva Motor Show is held at the Palexpo Exhibition Grounds adjacent to the Geneva Airport (GVA/LSGG – formerly and still unofficially known as Cointrin Airport).  For those flying by private jet to the International Geneva Motor Show, it is a short walk from the airport to the Auto Salon.

With concept cars, exotic super-cars and technical breakthroughs on display, the Geneva Motor Show provides an exciting glimpse into the future.
