The Vets vs The New Guard

Super Bowl LII sets records for the age differences between the head coaches and quarterbacks on the opposing teams.

The Head Coaches

Bill Bellichick, the 66-year old Patriots coach, has eight prior Super Bowl appearances as head coach, with an impressive five wins. He currently holds the title as the longest-tenured head coach in the NFL.

By contrast, Sean McVey, the 32-year old head coach of the Los Angeles Rams, is making his first Super Bowl appearance.  McVey holds the distinction as the youngest head coach in modern NFL history, with his hire by the Rams at the age of 30.

The Quarterbacks

At 41, Tom Brady is currently the oldest quarterback in the NFL.  Among his many accomplishments, he is one of only two players in NFL history to win five Super Bowls, and the only player to have won them all with a single franchise.   He has quarterbacked the Patriots to nine Super Bowl appearances, the most for any player in history.

While Brady was pick #199 in the 2000 NFL Draft, the Rams quarterback, 24-year old Jared Goff, came out as #1 in 2016.  Like Brady, Goff is making his Super Bowl debut his second year as a starting quarterback in the NFL.  Will he and McVey be able to form an equally as winning partnership as Brady and Bellichick?

Déjà Vu or Redemption?

Seventeen years after the Patriots defeated the Rams at Super Bowl 39, the two teams will face off again.  The only player from either team remaining on the roster for Super Bowl 53? Tom Brady.  Also at Super Bowl 39 and 53? Head coach Bill Bellichick.

Super Bowl 39 was New England’s first Super Bowl championship, and the franchise’s first league championship of any kind.  It was Brady’s second year as quarterback and Bellichick’s second year as the Patriots’ head coach.  In the 17 years since it was played, the two have led the team to an astounding nine Super Bowl appearances and five wins.

Since facing off against the Patriots in 2002, the Rams haven’t made it to a single Super Bowl.  With a move back to Los Angeles in 2016 (their home from 1946 to 1994), a record-setting new stadium under construction and young talent leading the team, there is a lot on the line for the Rams.  Like Brady and Bellichick, Goff and McVey are debuting at the Super Bowl the second year into their partnership.  Will this new duo be able to pull off a winning streak for the Rams?
