How many people commute by flight to work?

The numbers may come as a shock to you but they shouldn’t. There is between 5 and 10 per cent of the work population that Commute by Flight to work every day. They are known as super commuters and are regulars on popular flights like Los Angeles to San Francisco.

Why do people “super commute”?

The reason for a person to take a flight to work every day is quite simple. They love the city they live in and also love a great job in a different city. In this day and age, why not have the best of all worlds and live in the city you love and have the dream job in another.

How far are people’s “super commutes”?

In general people that super commute are going distance of between 180 and 250 miles. It is hard to make it worthwhile going much further. As you can well imagine “super commuters” are in all likelihood approved for TSA Pre-Check and also have worked out the exact timing of when to arrive at the airport. This all leads to a fairly smooth commute to work that sometimes could be less than a 40 mile car ride in traffic.

Why is Super Commuting growing?

The simple answer to this is technology. In the mobile world that we live in, people are more likely to be able to get stuff done on a flight than they were just a few years ago. This has increased the productivity of super commuters and also been beneficial that want to live in one city and work in another.

This practice although it may seem strange to many is in fact very common, there must be some sort of thrill in announcing “Sorry I am late, I missed my flight”.
