Hotels Embrace Coworking and Day Renting “Offices”

People at the Travelpro office have been working from home a lot, although we’ve been trickling back into the office a couple days a week. It’s been nice to have a change of scenery and to get out of the house once in a while.

For other people, they’re also getting a little cabin fever and have been looking for a change of scenery themselves. Some people are renting a desk or office in a Coworking space so they can just get out of the house for a while. In fact, coworking is starting to pick up in different parts of the world, as new coworking spaces open up even as others close down.

And the newest trend in the coworking space is coming from hotels as many of them have begun to embrace the idea of daily rental of offices for entrepreneurs who want a change of scenery or need a quieter place for online meetings.

For example, Accor hotels are renting out rooms in their Brazilian properties from 8 AM to 8 PM, while Raffles Singapore is renting their luxury suites so their guests can work in their stylish spaces. Butler service is included. (No, really!)

Meanwhile, the Ace Hotel New York has begun letting remote workers work in their lobby and the bar area for meetings, Zoom calls, and conference calls.

“We want people to sit in our lobbies and congregate and create that sense of space and sense of place,” Joel Rosen, president of hotel development group GFI Hospitality, told Travel Weekly.

Another example: Wythe Hotel, located in Brooklyn, NY has partnered with Industrious, a company that creates workplace environments. They have transformed some of Wythe’s lofts into workplace offices for up to four people. Several amenities are included with a room, including unlimited digital access to the New York Times, a smart TV, complimentary coffee and pastries, as well as printing services.

Around the world, conference calls are being made at the lobby bar, while three and four people are meeting in the lounge. Conference rooms that used to hold 20 people are being used by just six, all socially distant, but still together to talk business.

Hotels know that even if people are working remotely, they don’t mind gathering in a public space, even if it’s not their usual space.

Rosen said, “Yes, more people are working remotely, but people are also wanting to work in a more collaborative and social way, as well. I’ve seen tech startup groups in the public spaces of a hotel, whether it’s in the lobby or lounge, and they’ll be conducting a presentation, even though there are a million people around. There’s definitely more of an openness in the way people work today, and the traditional office walls are being broken down.”

Are you working remotely? How about in a coworking space? Would you — or have you — tried remote work in a hotel without actually staying at that hotel? Tell us about it on our Facebook page, or on our Twitter stream. You can also find us on our Instagram page at @TravelproIntl.
