As summer gives way to the glorious mellow fruitfulness of the autumn months, the Vineyard Hotel’s Complimentary Monday Wine tastings will continue to explore the abundance of vineyards in and around the Western Cape.
Tastings for the month begins on 4 April, when guests will enjoy a selection of wines from the cellars of Neil Ellis. With emphasis on the environment and on caring viticultural practices, this family-run estate focuses on making distinctive, refined wines that are expressive of their varied terroir and rank among some of South Africa’s finest.
On 11 April guests will sample wines from De Morgenzon, an extraordinary estate in Stellenbosch where they pipe Baroque music through their vineyards 24x7 because they believe that the power of music positively influences the ripening process. The proof of this is in each and every bottle of their wine.
The following week, on 18 April, guest will enjoy a selection of wines chosen by the Vineyard Hotel’s up and coming wine steward, Anita Thomson. Anita started at the Vineyard in 2008 and has worked her way from trainee to waiter, where she cultivated an interest in wine. Sparked by watching guests’ enjoyment, she would study labels on the bottles and the restaurant’s extensive wine list on quieter evenings. Her natural curiosity then extended to acquiring knowledge on the best-selling wines on the menu, popular wine estates and guests’ general feedback. Anita is a candidate of the Inter Hotel Challenge 2016 and will be using this opportunity on 18 April as part of her preparation for the upcoming competition and to build her confidence in this space.
Constantia Royale will be showcased on 25 April. This wine is a limited production Sauvignon Blanc made from grapes grown on the 16-hectare, family-owned farm of Nova Zonnestraal, in the Constantia Valley.
A representative from each of the respective estates will host the hour-long tastings from 18h00. Tastings take place on Mondays only and are free of charge.
