Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Princess Theatre Melbourne Review

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Princess Theatre Melbourne Review

Finally, I managed to watch the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Princess Theatre Melbourne. This is probably the highlight of my recent trip to Melbourne Australia recently and hence my review.

I watched Harry Potter movies but not a big fan that reads the books by JK Rowling.
I am also not a big fan of theatre plays but I did watch quite a few in Singapore, Macau, London and now in Australia.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child premiered in London on 30 July 2016 as a two part play. However, it is restaged as a single show at various cities around the world since last year. At Princess Theatre Melbourne, it is selling as single show in 2022 and that is the reason why the show starts from 7pm to 11pm.  There is a break in between like most theatre plays.

This is the latest book and the story begins nine years after Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows. This new story play follows Harry Potter as Head of Department of Magical Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Magic and his younger son, Albus Severus Potter.

I didn’t read the book and hence, the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child play makes it more interesting to me.

The story follows Albus Severus Potter who is attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy and having his own crisis due to the popularity of his father and his lack of interest in magic.

I am not going to spoil the story and the play and I am sure many people have read the book or you can read it somewhere in Google.

Let start with the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Princess Theatre Melbourne Review. This is my first time watching a play at Princess Theatre. I watched the 7pm show, went there early for some photos. There was no long queue and everything was very well organized.

There is a bar counter and merchandise counter at the inside. There is locker room for bags or big items so everyone can sits inside theatre comfortably.

There are 3 levels inside the theatre and they are Stalls, Dress Circle and Grand Circle. I sat at the lowest level, Stalls with the most expensive ticket of A$185 per person.

The seating is quite comfortable and there is a short announcement of wearing the mask if you want to. There are no photos or videos allowed during the play so I didn’t take any.

The Harry Potter and the Cursed Child play at Princess Theatre Melbourne is up to my expectation. I like the design of the stage and how they recreate the scenes using the layers of the stage.

For the casts, I like the main casts and the story is funny, sad and interesting. I felt that the play could be a bit long as they squeezed two plays into one play.

There are some moments at the play deserves big applause. I thought the main casts really perform very well especially William McKenna playing Scorpius Malfoy. He is incredibly talented and funny in his character.

There are some frustrating moments involving Harry Potter who is having his parenting issues. The battle scenes are nicely done and I really enjoyed the play.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Princess Theatre Melbourne is definitely worth the money if you are a big fan of Harry Potter. The stage design, the casts, music, visual and sound effects are world class.
