For those who went to Otaru in Hokkaido, you probably visited this place. This is the Otaru Music Box museum located at the end of the Sakaimachi Street (Shopping Street) and at Sumiyoshicho.

You can find the famous Otaru Steam Clock in front of the Otaru Music Box Museum. The steam clock is the main symbol of the Otaru Music Box Museum. The steam clock was constructed by Mr. Raymond Sanders, a Canadian clockmaker who also made the world’s first steam clock.

This is the largest steam clock in the world with 5.5 meters in height, 1 meter in width and 1.5 tonnes in weight.

The steam clock will whistles every 15 minutes so it is kind of hard to miss it and as many people usually gather around the clock.

Something interesting about this Otaru Music Box Museum Hokkaido. The building is constructed in 1912 as a main office for the rice merchant and it is converted to Otaru Music Box Museum in 1989.

Otaru Music Box Museum is the largest music box store in Japan with approximately 25,000 music boxes with 3,400 different types available.

We didn’t really explore it properly as we were rushing to visit other places in Otaru. We didn’t join any tour so we took our time experiencing the beautiful coastal town.

If you like music boxes or you want to get quality souvenirs, this is the place you can get. There are many different designs and prices, so you can take some time to explore. It can be quite packed inside here with tourists so you need to move around inside slowly.

Otaru Music Box Museum is a must visit place in Otaru. There are many good food along Sakaimachi Street so take your time, explore, eat and enjoy.

This is taken pre COVID and we have no idea when we can travel to Japan again. Maybe in 2022 or 2023? The important part is everyone must take care and be safe! This is the Otaru Music Box Museum Hokkaido
