Iris - Poppies - Queen Annes Lace in my Umbrian Garden

My garden works hard in spring, with not much thanks to me.  Thanks go to the fantastic Umbrian volcanic soil, good climate and so many self-seeding plants from the fields that have naturalised in my garden beds.   Plus of course, the many things I have planted myself which seem to like living here.  I have to admit I do very little to my garden apart from tidy it up from time to time - dead-head the roses and daisies, pull the weeds, prune and scatter the coffee grinds.  My plants love Lavazza!

May is the best blooming month of the year in these parts and clever gardeners have a staggered planting scheme which always allows some blooms to remain for the duration of the season. Then after a resting spell in August - high-summer - the miraculous repeat blooming begins...and so does the raking!   Luckily I am a 'hands-on' gardener and love doing all the boring chores as well, something I inherited from my mother, although unfortunately I didn't inherit her adept green fingers.

Here in Umbria I have planted for birds, butterflies and bees...they visit my garden in abundance and I hope they go away happy!  Ours is a simple garden, unpretentious, quite ordinary in fact but it gives us an extraordinary pleasure. To see the lilac awash with butterflies...to hear the incredible buzz of the bumble bees in the chestnut tree... and hear the Cuckoo and Hoopoe go about their daily business is enough to put a huge smile on my face.

During these beautiful mild months I am reminded how incredible nature is and I am forever grateful for all the hard-workers in my garden....contributing to making a small corner of the earth we happily share a place of beauty which has become a paradise in my eyes.
