La Cantina del Bartoccio  - Trevi Umbria

One of my favorite places to eat in Trevi is a small trattoria called La Cantina del Bartoccio.   Situated on the edge of the stunning piazza you can dine alfresco soaking up the ambiance and daily life of the villagers and their busy little square.  It makes a nice spot for people-watching.   The food is also a very good reason to go...they serve a variety of the normal pasta dishes, plus hot second course dishes such as grilled or roasted pork.   Their antipasti is a great starter and a brilliant plate to share - often for lunch we will order just that with some extra sides and a salad...  But my favorite dish to eat here is their Guanciale - cured pork cheek.

Guanciale has a very delicate texture and flavour, it is simply delicious!   It looks uncomplicated on the plate with just a simple balsamico reduction to accompany the meat but the flavour is out-of-this-world. Pair it with a local robust red, a salad - bread comes automatically - and you should be quite satisfied.    My after-lunch treat would  be an affogato at the bar across the way, or a gelato. Then a walk through the empty streets of the town while the inhabitants are taking their afternoon siesta.  The piazza comes alive again in the early evening, when people stop by the bar for an aperativo.
