High Summer in Umbria

The month of July has past in a whirlwind of arrivals, departures, outings and drives, sharing of meals, meetings with friends, weekend markets, summer concerts, local festivities and general conviviality.  July is always a favorite month here.   Despite the fact that the entire peninsula and the rest of Europe has been experiencing a prolonged heatwave, the days were long and langourous.   August promises more of the same.

The garden held up bravely during this heat and provided shade and a cool breeze on the hottest days and evenings. Dining al fresco under the cooling arbour of the Castagno was mandatory - morning, noon and night.  Here we raised glasses to salute new and old friends alike and shared many meals under that vast shady canopy.

The one heavy shower of the month provided a brief but welcome nourishment to all surrounding nature and suddenly the landscape was luminous again, awash with various shades of green and gold.  Our own bodies seemed to bounce back with a renewed vitality.

And so the month of August is now upon us, a month of Sundays...the true holiday season for all Italians.  Days are slow, work has finished, families and friends relax together also sharing convivial times.
The Umbrian calendar presents some great festivals again this month and I will be posting an update on those events later this week.   In the meantime enjoy these slow days...

Saluti a tutti !
