Colds and Tummy Bugs when travelling by Air

How many of us have had a cold, cough or upset tummy after a flight?

Some times you know it's going to happen because someone on your flight has had a cold or has been sneezing, so you half expect it !!!  But there are many occasions when this is not the case, but we all accept it.

I few years ago I worked in the press room at the F1 and MotoGP 's even then there was often tummy bugs and colds going around, these were put down to long hours worked and lots of workers, fans and team employees from all different parts of the world, again it was just accepted.

I am still interested in both of the above Motorsports and follow them on the TV, you often hear mentioned that there is a tummy bug going around the paddock or a summer cold, many working days being lost due to them.

It seems that the FIA (F1 Governing body) decided to employ a company to investigate the cause, as the problem was getting worse.

From what I understand they did a thorough investigation including taking swabs from everything and having them analysed.

What they found was that the place most germ riddled was the black/white bins at the airport, the ones when you have to go through Airport Security, you put your bag, coats etc. into them, wait for them to come through the scanner, empty them , then they are stacked and reused by the next person. These have been sneezed on, touch by people with colds and other ailments, apparently they are never cleaned !!

It has been recommended that as soon as you get through security, go straight to the wash rooms and wash your hands, the hand soaps in these facilities have germ killing properties.

Hopefully this will make travelling a better and mean you will not be ill whilst on holiday or when get home.
