At the last count there are some 10,000 mobile bee hives on the Island, which have some 500 bee keepers caring for them.
The bees are not at all like the normal English Bee ( Yellow and Black ), it's stripes are black and a dull silver in colour it's size relates more to the English Wasp.
The island produces a variety of multi-flower Honey, depending on the altitude of the hives, there is a great difference between those produced in the high mountains, the foothills or on the coast.
There are also single-flower honeys such as Banana, Chestnut and Heather Honey to name just a few.
The Municipal of Villa de Arico in the South Eastern part of the island organises a ´ Ruta de Miel' ( Route of the Honey ) a guided tour led by a local bee keeper who explains all there is to know about bees and bee keeping.
