Located on Courtallam Road, the Western Block branch of Schaffter Higher Secondary School in Tirunelveli holds a significant place in the school's rich history. Originally known as Church Mission College when it was founded in 1880, this humble yet elegant structure has undergone a fascinating transformation from a college to a branch of a renowned school.
Schaffter Higher Secondary School is renowned as one of the oldest educational institutions in Tirunelveli, and its name pays tribute to an exceptional individual, Rev. Schaffter. Born into a family with a long-standing commitment to education in the Tirunelveli district, Rev. Henry James Schaffter's roots can be traced back to Nallur village near Alankulam. After completing his education in Ireland and earning an M.A. degree, Rev. Schaffter returned to Tirunelveli in 1871. From 1876 to 1880, he served as a faculty member at C.M.S. English School on Courtallam Road, which coincidentally is the present site of the Western Block branch of Schaffter School.
In 1880, the school underwent a significant transition and was upgraded to the status of C.M.S. College, with Rev. Schaffter assuming the role of Principal and playing a pivotal role in its success. During his tenure, the construction of the Main Block took place, and his unwavering dedication greatly enhanced the college's reputation. Consequently, in 1897, the college was relocated from Courtallam Road to its current location in Tirunelveli High Road.
In 1918, the college underwent yet another relocation, finding its new home in Palayamkottai and adopting the name St. John's College. The Western Block branch of Schaffter School, which started as Church Mission College, continued its educational journey under the guidance of dedicated educators.
While the motto of Schaffter School is "Disce aut discede," translating to "Learn or Leave!," it's interesting to note that when the institution functioned as a college, the motto etched on its elevation was "Pray and Work." These mottos reflect the ethos of the institution, emphasizing the importance of learning, personal growth, and a strong work ethic.
Today, the Western Block branch of Schaffter School stands as a testament to its illustrious past and the commitment to education that has defined its journey. Students who walk through its doors are inheritors of a legacy that spans generations and reflects the tireless efforts of dedicated educators.
