History:

The temple was built by Kulotunga Chola II.

Temple Layout:

The most famous temple of Kundrathur is situated on top of a small hill which can be reached through 84 steps. It is the only Murugan temple which faces the north direction.

The sanctum enshrines Lord Subramanya along with his two consorts Valli and Devasena. It is designed in such a way that Subramanya is seen either with Valli or with Devasena when viewed from the Ardha Mandap.

The temple has a Raja gopura. In front of the sanctum, the flag staff, bali peetha and Mayura vahan are found. On the way to the hilltop temple, there is a shrine for Valanchuzhi Vinayak.

In Ardha Mandap, there is an east facing shrine of utsav idols of Subramanya and his two consorts. In Maha Mandap, there is a shrine for Shiv Linga and Ganesh.

Dakshinamurti, Vishnu and Durga are found as the niche idols. The sub shrines of Navagraha, Naga Linga under the tree, Vishwanatha-Vishalakshi and Bhairav are found in the prakara.

Happy travelling.
