India’s Anticipation: Eid-al-Fitr on April 10 or 11

The Holy month of Ramzaan reaches its conclusion. People are keen to celebrate the holy festival of Eid al-Fitr and only 2-3 days are left for it. However, the confusion regarding the day of the celebration is making rounds all around the world. It is worth noting that Ramadan, the holy month of fasting is a significant month among the Islamic community. During this month, people from all around the world observe fasting from morning to evening till the day of Eid which marks the end of fast. Eid al-fitr stems from an Arabic term which means “festival of breaking the fast” and due to that it is of huge importance and significance among the Islamic community.

Muslims wait for an entire month to celebrate this day and the preparation of Eid started a month before. Eid also observes the first day of Shawwal which is the 10th month of the Islamic calendar. The date of Eid is not specific as it falls on a different date or day every year. Hence, it is tough to assume a particular date to celebrate this religious festival. The date of Eid comes from Saudi Arabia and due to that, the confusion regarding the date is quite obvious. This year as well, Eid is falling on two tentative dates, one is April 10 and the second is April 11. In India, it is expected on these dates, depending on the sighting of the moon.

Kerala Commemorates Eid-al-Fitr On Same Date of Saudi Arabia

Apart from other states, Kerala is the only state in India where the holy festival commemorates based on a sighting of the moon in Saudi Arabia. The rest of the world and other parts or states of India celebrate this festival on the next day. Kerala will celebrate this holy event on the same date as Saudi Arabia. Today’s sighting of the moon in Saudi Arabia will decide the celebration of Eid-al-Fitr in India. Because of the time difference, India will celebrate the holy event on the next day. Hence, the confusion about the date of the Islamic festival will be clear today after the sighting of the crescent moon in Saudi Arabia.

As of now, India along with other South Asian countries assuming the date of Eid-al-Fitr on Wednesday, 10 April 2024. It will be decided only after the sighting of the moon in Saudi Arabia on Monday, 8 April 2024. If the sighting of the crescent moon takes place today then Saudi Arabia will commemorate the holy event on Tuesday, 9 April 2024. But if the sighting of the moon will happen tomorrow then the holy festival will be on the next day. Understandably, the celebration of the festival depends on the sighting of the moon. Before the day of Eid-al-Fitr, the day is known as Chand Raat which signifies the end of the holy month of fasting known as Zul-Hijjah. The name Chaand Raat drives the meaning of “night of the moon”. This day also has a huge significance and is celebrated all around the world by the Islamic community.
