Preparing Your Campervan for Sale

Detailing and Maintenance

A clean and well-maintained campervan makes a great first impression. Focus on both the interior and exterior to make your campervan look as appealing as possible. There’s no doubt that you have seen some adverts with photos of really poor looking vehicles – and the reason why? You see them because they hang around while the owner gets knocked down on price because the vehicle looks shabby!

Documentation and Records

Having all your documents and maintenance records ready and organised is essential when selling your campervan. It not only shows that the vehicle has been well-cared for but also instills confidence in potential buyers. Have you kept all your manuals? If yours is a self-build have you created a “how-to” manual like I did when I sold Walt? This really impressed the new buyers.

Pricing Your Campervan

Conduct thorough market research to understand the value of similar models and set a competitive price when selling your campervan. This ensures that your campervan attracts attention without underselling its worth. This is tricky. Campervan pricing can be very subjective and it is of course specific to your vehicle and any modifications you may have made. If you’re anything like me you keep an eye on the market anyway, but you can at least filter by completed listings on ebay which is a help. Check out EU prices on mobile.de too.

Advertising Your Campervan

Choosing the Right Platforms

Consider the pros and cons of advertising on specialised campervan sites versus general online marketplaces. Specialised sites often attract serious buyers. My last van sold indirectly via a listing on thesamba.com (where you can still view my now expired listing) where lots of specialist vehicles can attract overseas buyers. There’s no doubt though that you need to use several platforms. ebay is a logical start but certainly consider Facebook Marketplace (hold on tight for spammers and scammers) and autotrader amongst others for reach (use exactly the same ad copy and photos to speed things up).

Creating an Effective Ad

High-quality photos and a detailed description can make your ad stand out. Ensure that you provide clear and attractive visuals of your campervan.

Communicating with Potential Buyers

Prompt and professional communication is key. Be ready to answer questions and arrange for a pre-sale inspection to build trust and transparency. The offer of a test drive is a must.

Finalising the Sale

Negotiating the Sale Price

Negotiation is a part of the process. Be open yet firm in your negotiations to arrive at a fair price for both parties.

Completing the Paperwork

Ensure all necessary paperwork and legal documents are completed to officially transfer ownership of the campervan.

Post-Sale Considerations

Following up with the buyer after the sale can help ensure their satisfaction and maintain a good reputation for future sales. It’s also better to be open to this rather than shutting the door with the intention to never hear from them again. I say this from experience as my Westfalia Florida went to a French couple who flew over the drive the van home to France. Unexpectedly the van blew the main coolant hose off the front of the engine on their drive north up the M23 which wrecked the engine. I know this is an extreme example but it did happen to me. Be prepared to do whatever is required in this scenario. I had the van recovered on my insurance and had to refund them while the remedial work was done. (I say remedial – the van needed a new engine!)

Conclusion

Selling your campervan quickly and efficiently requires preparation, proper pricing, effective advertising, and clear communication. By following these tips, you can improve your chances of a satisfactory sale.
