Kedarnath:

Kedarnath, one of the holiest Hindu pilgrim sites is perched at an altitude of 3584 metres amidst towering snow-clad Himalayan peaks near the source of river Mandakini. It is the third pilgrim spot on the Char Dham Yatra circuit. Devotees cleanse their body and soul with sacred waters of Yamunotri and Gangotri and proceed for the pilgrimage to Kedarnath. Pilgrims also carry the sacred waters of Ganga from Gangotri to worship Lord Shiva at Kedarnath.

Madmaheshwar

The Divine Place regarded as the ‘second Kedar’ is perched at an altitude of 3,289 metres, at the base of Chaukhamba peak. The navel of Lord Shiva is said to have reappeared here and Shiva is worshipped in the form of a navel- shaped lingam. The water here is considered very holy and only few drops are enough for purification of body and soul. The pilgrim site. amidst snow clad mountains is also known for its scenic beauty. The Kedarnath and Neelkanth peaks are visible from here and confluence of Madmaheswar • Ganga and Markanda Ganga at Gaundar is located nearby. During winters the Madamaheswar temple and the idols are ceremoniously taken to Ukhimath for everyday ritual worship.

Road: Madmaheswar lies about 25 kms. north-east of Guptkashi. It can be reached by road from Guptkashi up to Kalimath, which is 196 kms. from Rishikesh. From Kalimath one has to trek the remaining 31 kms.

Tungnath

The sacred Place Tungnath temple at an altitude of 3,680 metres atop Chandranath Parbat is the highest shrine among the PanchKedars and marks the site where the arm of Lord Shiva appeared. The magnificent temple with a 16 door dome enshrines a Shivalinga and an idol of Adi Guru Shankaracharya. The temple of Nanda Devi is another important shrine at Tungnath. The peak of Tungnath is considered to be very sacred as it is the source of three springs which form the river Akashkamini. The site of amazing Akashlinga waterfall is truly spectacular, as it seems to descending directly from heaven.

The shrine of Tungnath closes during the winters and the priests move to Mukunath, about 19 kms.

The shrine of Chandrashila or the’moon mountain’ is another worth visiting site near Tungnath. The beautiful trek to Chandrashila passes through scenic surroundings and takes about 1 hour from the temple.

Road: The nearest road head is Chopta (3 kms.), on the Kund – Gopeshwar Road. From Chopta one can trek or hire a sturdy pony. Tungnath is 37 kms. from Ukhimath.

Rudranath

The Rudranath Temple, is witness of Lord Shiva’s face is said to have reappeared here, which is worshipped at the temple of Rudranath, located at an altitude of 2,286 mts. in a beautiful meadow. The temple is surrounded by a number of sacred pools like, Surya Kund, Chandra Kund, Tara Kund, Manas Kund etc. and the towering Nanda Devi, Trishul and Nanda Ghunti peaks form the backdrop.

It is believed that the departed souls cross the Vaitarni river (the water of salvation) flowing here before entering the another world. Thus, the devotees visit Rudranath to offer ritual obeisance to their ancestors.

Rudranath can be reached via Gopeshwar (23 kms.), the first S kms. are motorable and one has to trek the remaining 18 kms., endowed with spectacular scenic beauty. A 3 kms. trek from Rudranath temple leads to the temple of Anusuya Devi.

Road: Rudranath lies on the Gopeshwar – Kedarnath road. It is 22 kms. trek from Sagar, which is 219 kms. from Rishikesh.

Kalpeshwar

The Kalpeshwar or Kalpnath, a Panch Kedar site where Lord Shiva’s matted dreadlocks are said to have surfaced. Devotees worship at the small rock cut temple of Kalpeshwar, which is believed to enshrine the hairs of Lord Shiva.

Mythological legends suggest that sage Arghya underwent hard penance here and created Urvashi, the celestial nymph. Legendary sage Durvasha is also said to have meditated here under the Kalpavriksha or the wish-fulfilling tree. Rishi Durvasha had blessed Kunti, the mother of Pandavas the power to invoke any of the forces of nature and get whatever she desired.

Thus, the place is very popular among the saints who wish to meditate and pray in peace.

The temple on the banks of a river is preceded by a natural cave passage and affords panoramic views of the scenic surroundings.

Railhead: Rishikesh (255 kms.)

Road: Helang, 243 km on the Rishikesh – Badrinath road is the last motor head and can be reached by buses and taxis. From here Kalpehswar is 12 kms. trek off the main road. 2 km before Kalpeshwar is the village of Urgam.
