Richard McSpadden, Senior Vice President of the Air Safety Institute, died in a plane crash along with another person near Lake Placid Airport in upstate New York. The cause of the crash is unknown, but early reports suggest there was an emergency during takeoff. McSpadden, a former commander of the USAF Thunderbirds, was well-known in the aviation community for his work on analyzing accidents and creating safety-related content. The AOPA spokesman expressed deep sadness over the loss of McSpadden and stated that more information would be available soon.
