Dubai to Boost Religious Tourism, Plans to Build the World’s First Floating Mosque

In a bid to enhance the region’s spiritual charm and bolster Religious Tourism, Dubai’s Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department (IACAD) recently unveiled plans to build a Floating Mosque as part of the Religious Tourism Project. This captivating Dubai underwater mosque will be the first of its kind in the world, all set to seamlessly meld with the emirate’s iconic landmarks and waterways, adding a new jewel to its glittering crown.

The exciting news came out after a press conference on September 21, 2023, at IACAD’s headquarters, where its cultural communication consultant, Ahmed Khalfan Al Mansouri, said, “The project contributes to strengthening the emirate’s position as an attraction point for international religious tourism for residents, visitors, and tourists, both Muslims and non-Muslims.” He further stated that this floating mosque will be one of the region’s significant sights, and the project will overall reflect the tourist footfall to Dubai, increasing it by three to four percent.

With its construction scheduled to be completed in a year, it will be built beneath the Tolerance Bridge by the Dubai Water Canal and will be connected to the mainland. The Dubai underwater floating mosque cost will be a whopping AED 55 million and is slated to have three floors, where its first level will be submerged in water. It is reserved for prayer for up to 75 worshippers and features all facilities, including ablution and restroom areas. The other two levels will showcase Islamic exhibits, host a coffee shop, and also serve as a venue for enlightening activities.

The best thing is that its door will be open to people representing all religions but require visitors to comply with Islamic customs and traditions, especially in terms of dressing that is applicable to all genders. Women must choose clothes that cover their shoulders and heads.

Apart from the Dubai floating mosque, the Religious Tourism Project by IACAD initiates programs such as ‘Hala Ramadan’ and ‘Dubai Iftar,’ an endeavor to unite diverse religious communities to enjoy a meal together during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. The project also aims to conduct the Quranic exhibition, narrating Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s Quranic journey, which included the printing and distributing of thousands of Holy Quran copies worldwide.

There are also plans to add a dedicated segment to the first-of-its-kind Quran Park, where you can learn more about prophetic medicine, plants, and herbs referenced in the Quran. Another significant initiative of the project is to set up exclusive markets during the festive times, including Ramadan and Eid; they will be more than a place for shopping and also shed light on the emirate’s culture, religion, and traditions.
