Definitely deserving of its reputation as the most hazardous route to drive on is Sach Pass. The risks and the ability to make you gasp for air are well known, but I genuinely want to draw attention to the breathtaking vistas and unspoiled scenery along the way.

The ideal setting for peace and quiet is a mountain range covered in snow and giving untouched natural beauty. You will be enthralled by the valleys and mountain peaks, which are all in plain sight. Sach Pass is a great escape for those who enjoy the outdoors, taking photographs, and seeking adventure.

But because you’re here, I’ll assume that we indeed share a passion for the Himalayas. So trust me when I say that you should put this place on your travel itinerary. It is a wonderful location to visit.

About Sach Pass & Pangi Valley
Sach Pass, the Big Daddy of all Himalayan Mountain passes, is well-known—no, infamous. It is located in the Himachal Pradesh region’s Chamba District at a mind-boggling elevation of 4,414 metres. The Chamba valley and the Pangi valley are connected by the enormous Sach Pass, which is part of the Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas. With a distance of just 170 KM, it is both the shortest and most difficult route between Chamba and the Killar.

You have access to some of the most breathtaking and fascinating spots to visit in the Himalayas once you enter Pangi Valley. Dharwas, Luj, Sural, Hundan, Findroo, Findar, Mindhal, Parmar, and others are just a few of the stunning locations in the Pangi Valley near Killar that are worth seeing.

There are other charming towns throughout the entire Pangi Valley, and in addition to hotels or guesthouses in Killar, Cherry also has a PWD rest home where you may stay in privacy.

Best time to visit Sach Pass

This pass, which serves as the entrance to Pangi Valley, is open from early June until mid-October. Be advised that the road is now congested and unpaved. This is the quickest way to go to Killar. After this road (Sach Pass) was finished, the trip from Pathankot to Leh via Sach pass was cut in half to 670 kilometres, but the distance via Manali was increased to 800 kilometres.

Returning to Sach Pass, you HAVE to go here at least once in your life. It is a magnificent feeling to reach the summit and take in the scenery and landscape. Will a lot of work be required? Yes. Will you occasionally face difficulties and discomfort? Absolutely! Will it fascinate you? You would, for sure.

It should be mentioned that from July to the end of the season is when Sach Pass is most comfortable (if there ever was such a thing). This is my recommendation because PWD clears the snow effectively and there is generally constant traffic. Go early in the season or at the end if you want to experience snow and a genuine difficult grind, though!

Distance & Coordinates of Sach Pass
The Pathankot-Dalhousie Road, the Manali-Udaipur Road, and the Udhampur/Anantnag-Kishtwar-Paddar-Pangi Road are the three routes that lead to Sach Pass. Given that the other routes are quite lengthy in contrast, the first is the most accessible, riskiest, most well-traveled path.

Regarding Pangi, it should be mentioned that the Paddar valley (Jammu & Kashmir) route is open all year long. However, the route is lengthier because one must travel via Jammu and Kashmir on the Chamba to Baderwah or Udhampur road.

How to Reach Sach Pass
Tissa (63 KM, 15709 Mts), Bairagarh (90 KM, 2800 Mts), and Satrundi (106 KM, 3400 Mts) are all on the way from Chamba. Sach Pass (120 km; 4420 metres) – Killar (166 km, 2590 Mts) and Bagotu (130 km, 3600 Mts).

Delhi is the starting point for your journey to Dalhousie; the remaining distance is roughly 135 KM. You should be able to arrive in Sach in ideal condition after roughly 6-7 hours of driving. It is crucial to remember that the connectivity is good up until Bairagarh.

After that, however, the following 30-35 KMs are badly constructed, if at all, and you would need around 2 hours to complete this section alone. Buckle up, then. Additionally, you are climbing nearly 2000 metres from here! Physical preparation comes second to mental preparation.

Sach Pass Itinerary
Now that the vacation is being planned, you need to be emotionally and physically ready! You should think about how you’ll split up your vacation, where you’ll stay, and what will provide you with the greatest possibilities to acclimatise!

Day 1 – Delhi – Dalhousie
Dalhousie is reachable by car in around ten hours. Alternatively, you might fly to Dharamshala and then drive 120 miles in roughly three hours from there. I advise you to travel from Delhi itself. Spend the night and discover Dalhousie’s charm!

Day 2 – Dalhousie – Bairagarh
From Dalhousie, you’ll go 121 kilometres in under 3.5 hours of driving. Mannat Homestay and Hotel Chamunda are two affordable hotels in the area that are worth checking out.

While Bairagarh can look like a rest stop settlement in Himachal Pradesh, do venture outside and take in the scenery. The amenities are really basic, and there isn’t much to first grab your eye. However, you’ll adore the scenery, the warm locals, and the tranquil surroundings!

Day 3 – Bairagarh – Satrundi – Sach Pass – Killar
Where the tarmac stops is where you can leave Bairagarh. From there, the trail continues for about 25 KM and gets progressively poorer and narrower. The bright side is that this road passes through some amazing and interesting landscapes.

You initially travel through thick forests and verdant landscape. The foliage eventually vanishes as you continue to ascend to incredible altitudes, and you make your way through a more desolate area punctuated by gushing streams and waterfalls.

Do keep in mind to go from Bairagarh as early as you can in the morning because the Nallahs become flooded as the sun rises during the day. There are 76 kilometres between you and Killar. Every KM will be permanently imprinted in your memory!

Day 4 onwards
Enjoy your time in Killar, then head back either that way or from the Manali side.
