Nestled at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Colorado Springs is a vibrant city that offers endless opportunities for exploration and adventure.

The city’s natural beauty is unmatched, with its towering peaks, winding rivers, and lush forests. It is literally an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise.

Visitors can indulge in activities such as hiking, biking, rock climbing, kayaking, and much more. The city also has a rich history, with numerous museums and cultural attractions that showcase the area’s past.

Outdoor Activities

One of the main reasons why people flock to Colorado Springs is its outdoor activities. The city has a slew of options that cater to all skill levels, from first-time-out- beginners to seasoned adventurers.

Hiking is arguably the most popular outdoor activity, with countless trails that deliver breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Some of the best hiking spots include Garden of the Gods, Cheyenne Mountain State Park, and Pikes Peak.

Visitors of all skill and experience levels can also go rock climbing at Garden of the Gods or try their hand at kayaking or whitewater rafting on the Arkansas River.

Best Scenic Drives

Colorado Springs is home to some of the most scenic drives in the country, with winding roads that take you through unbelievable landscapes and sensational vistas.

One of the most popular drives is the Pikes Peak Highway, which takes you to the summit of Pikes Peak, one of Colorado’s highest peaks.

At 14,115 feet, Pikes Peak is a whopping 8,000 feet above Colorado Springs, but despite its massiveness, it’s not the Rocky Mountain state’s highest mountain. That honor goes to Mt. Elbert, who clocks in at 14,440 feet.

The 19-mile drive offers dazzling views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Another great scenic drive choice is the Gold Belt Tour Scenic Byway, which takes you through historic mining towns and offers a glimpse into Colorado’s rich mining heritage.

While Colorado Springs has great mountains and scenery, it also has some pretty impressive attractions that cater to a wide variety of interests and age groups.

In addition to the super popular Garden of the Gods natural park that boasts, visitors to the mile-high state can see the United States Air Force Academy, which houses several museums and offers guided tours of its impressive campus.

Other fun, family-friendly attractions include the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum, and the National Museum of World War II Aviation.

Hidden Gems In Colorado Springs

Yes, the popular attractions are undoubtedly worth visiting. But to really discover Colorado Springs, you need to go off the beaten path.

One of the hidden gems often overlooked by tourists is just a short drive outside the city. The Paint Mines Interpretive Park is a unique geological formation with colorful rock formations, hoodoos, and spires.

Another hidden gem is the Manitou Incline, a steep hiking trail offering stunning views of the mountains. It’s open daily from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Be sure to stretch before attempting to complete the 2,744-step climb, and don’t forget to make your reservation ahead of time.

Looking for something less strenuous? Head over to the historic Old Colorado City. Download a free walking map and check out the local boutiques, cafes, and art galleries.

Best Places To Eat In Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs is a foodie’s paradise, with restaurants offering a range of cuisine options. Indulge in local specialties such as Colorado green chili or try international cuisine at one of the city’s many ethnic restaurants.

(Too tired from a day of hiking to go out for chili? No worries. Colorado Green Chili has you covered. They ship their famous Green Chili sauce anywhere in the U.S.)

My choice for best restaurants in Colorado Springs include The Rabbit Hole, which offers a unique dining experience in a whimsical setting, and Four by Brother Luck, which serves up innovative dishes using locally-sourced ingredients.

Where To Stay In Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs has a wide range of accommodation options, ranging from Airbnb and Vrbo to luxury hotels, and catering to all budgets and preferences. Choose to stay in a five-star hotel, a cozy bed and breakfast, or a rustic, off-grid cabin in the mountains—it’s your vacation, live the dream!

My choice for some of the best hotels in Colorado Springs, include The Broadmoor, a five-star resort that serves up unparalleled elegance and attention to detail, service, and world-class cuisine—AND spectacular views of the mountains.

The Mining Exchange is another historic hotel boasting elegant rooms and a prime location in downtown Colorado Springs. The Mining Exchange first opened in 1902 as, you guessed, it a local stock exchange for mining companies.

Day Trips And Excursions

While Colorado Springs has plenty to offer, visitors can also take day trips to explore the surrounding areas.

One of the most popular day trips is to the nearby town of Manitou Springs, which features several natural springs and a charming downtown area and is barely a fifteen-minute drive.

Visitors can also take a trip to the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park, home to the world’s highest suspension bridge—built in 1929—and enjoy the truly breathtaking views of the Royal Gorge.

Other notable day trips include the historic mining town of Cripple Creek or a drive through the scenic San Juan Skyway.

Tips For Getting To Colorado Springs

Before heading to Colorado Springs, there are a few things to remember.

Weather

Let’s face it, the weather in Colorado Springs can be …unpredictable. It’s always a good idea to pack clothing that you can layer and be prepared for all types of weather.

Altitude Sickness

Colorado Springs is up there. At just over 6,000 feet (6.035), visitors to Colorado Springs can experience altitude sickness, especially when hiking or climbing at high altitudes. People experience altitude sickness when they ascend too quickly without allowing enough time to adjust to reduced oxygen and air pressure changes. Altitude sickness symptoms can include

  • feeling (and being sick)
  • headache
  • dizziness
  • lack of physical coordination
  • shortness of breath

Protect yourself by staying hydrated and taking it slow. The CDC has some great recommendations on how visitors can avoid experiencing altitude sickness.

Lip Balm & Moisturizer

Bring a few of your favorite lip protection balms and creams—you’ll never have enough. And you’ll never appreciate it more than when you’re visiting Colorado.
