New York, New York: Home to the $1 Slice

There’s no denying that New York City is a food lover’s paradise. From the iconic $1 pizza slice to Michelin-starred restaurants, this city has it all. My first-hand experiences in NYC have been nothing short of a culinary odyssey. Sampling everything from bagels and lox at Russ & Daughters to the mouthwatering pastrami sandwiches at New York’s oldest deli, Katz’s Delicatessen, I am constantly amazed by the variety and quality of food available. New York’s diverse food scene offers something for everyone, making it a top pick for my list of The Best U.S. Cities For Foodies 2023.

Waikiki, Hawai’i

Waikiki is one of the best U.S. cities for foodies in 2023, with a wide variety of restaurants and food trucks to choose from. From classic Hawaiian dishes like poke bowls and laulau to international cuisines like Japanese udon noodles and Mexican tacos, Waikiki has something for every taste.

For budget travelers, there are plenty of affordable options such as Marukame Udon and Rainbow Drive-In. For those looking for a more upscale experience, La Mer (AAA Five Diamond, Forbes 5 Stars), and Hy’s Steak House offer delicious meals with stunning ocean views.

Food trucks are also popular in Waikiki, Hawai’i offering everything from Korean BBQ to Italian gelato. For some of the best baked goods on the island, be sure to check out the amazing Malasadas (Portugese doughnut) at on of Leonard’s Bakery’s “Malasadamobiles.” Be sure to check out our guide on the Best Coffee in Waikiki to go along with your Malasadas! And it’s not just Waikiki, Big Island has some amazing food options too!

New Orleans, Louisiana: A Taste of the Bayou

Commander’s Palace

New Orleans is a city that will transport you into a different world with its unique blend of cultures, music, and mouthwatering cuisine. Anytime I’m  NOLA it’s a rollercoaster of flavors, from the spicy jambalaya and gumbo to the sweet beignets at Café du Monde. The city’s French Quarter is home to a variety of culinary gems, such as Commander’s Palace and Galatoire’s, where I experienced the true taste of Creole and Cajun cuisine. The vibrant atmosphere of New Orleans is truly infectious, making it a must-visit for foodies.

San Francisco, California: A Foodie’s Paradise

Pork Belly Plum Salad at State Bird Provisions, San Francisco

San Francisco’s culinary scene reflects the city’s rich cultural history. During my most recent visit, I was thoroughly impressed by the innovative dishes at State Bird Provisions and the farm-to-table experience at Nopa. No trip to San Francisco would be complete without stopping at the Ferry Building Marketplace, where I sampled artisanal cheeses, locally-produced chocolates, and freshly-baked bread. This city’s commitment to fresh, sustainable ingredients sets it apart, making it a top destination for food lovers.

Los Angeles, California: A Melting Pot of Flavors

Kogi Dog, Kogi BBQ

In Los Angeles, foodies can embark on a global culinary adventure without leaving the city. The food in L.A. does not disappoint, from authentic Korean BBQ in Koreatown to mouthwatering taco food trucks lining the streets. You know I can’t write a list of the best U.S. cities for foodies, 2023, without mentioning food trucks! The city’s eclectic food scene is its strongest asset, and whenever I’m in L.A. you’ll find me at fusion restaurants like Kogi BBQ and Guelaguetza, which serve up a fresh take on traditional dishes. Los Angeles’ vibrant and ever-changing food landscape makes it an essential stop for food enthusiasts.

Portland, Oregon: A Food Cart Haven

Smaaken Dutch-style Waffles

Portland’s food scene is as unique and quirky as the city itself. I love the abundance of food carts and trucks, offering everything from gourmet grilled cheese to authentic Thai cuisine. My personal favorites included the Korean fusion at Kim Jong Grillin’ and the Dutch-style waffles from Smaaken. Portland’s thriving craft beer scene perfectly complements its food cart culture, making it an exciting destination for foodies seeking something different.

Chicago, Illinois: More Than Just Deep-Dish Pizza

Alinea, Chicago

While Chicago may be famous for its deep-dish pizza, the city’s culinary scene is so much more than that. I enjoyed the innovative dishes at Alinea and the impeccable Italian cuisine at Ciccio Mio. Chicago’s  neighborhoods offer a wide range of dining experiences, from authentic Mexican fare in Pilsen to Eastern European delights in the Polish Village. The Windy City’s rich culinary history and ever-evolving food scene make it a must-visit for food lovers.

Sacramento, California: Best Authentic Pho

Head to Sacramento for the best authentic pho 2023

Sacramento, the city I once called home, is a gastronomic paradise for foodies and a must-visit destination. Its culinary scene, especially the mouthwatering Vietnamese cuisine, never failed to delight my taste buds. From the best authentic pho to crunchy Banh Mi, each dish offers a memorable experience. The farm-to-fork movement and local farmers’ markets only add to the city’s charm, providing fresh, high-quality ingredients that elevate every meal. Sacramento’s rich culinary tapestry left a lasting impression on me, making it a food lover’s dream come true.

Charleston, South Carolina: Lowcountry Cuisine at Its Finest

Fine dining at the Charleston Grill

Charleston’s culinary scene is a delightful blend of Southern charm and innovative dining. My incredible dining experience in this city was marked by irresistable shrimp and grits, perfectly prepared at Husk and the seared scallops at Charleston Grill, the Triggerfish at FIG, and oysters at The Ordinary, showcasing the best of Lowcountry cuisine. Charleston’s vibrant food scene is a testament to its rich history and the dedication of its talented chefs.

Miami, Florida: A Taste of the Tropics

Florida Stone Crab at Joe’s Stone Crab, Miami Beach

Miami is a city where the flavors of the Caribbean, Latin America, and the Southern United States collide. I was captivated by the delicious Cuban sandwiches from Versailles and the fresh seafood at Joe’s Stone Crab. The city’s bustling food scene also offers a taste of the tropics, with refreshing ceviche and mouth watering mojitos at spots like Cvi.Che 105. A trip to Miami is incomplete without a taste of its vibrant culinary offerings.

San Diego, California: Sunshine and Tacos

El Gordo Tacos

San Diego’s food scene celebrates the city’s close proximity to Mexico. My time in San Diego was filled with delicious tacos from Tacos El Gordo and Lucha Libre. The city’s craft beer scene is equally impressive, with local breweries such as Stone Brewing and Ballast Point offering the perfect pairing for a flavorful meal. San Diego’s laid-back atmosphere and delicious cuisine make it an ideal destination for foodies seeking sun and flavor.

Austin, Texas: A Barbecue Lover’s Dream
