New Zealand FAQs

Now that we’ve covered the best all-inclusive trips to New Zealand and the best things to do in New Zealand, let’s touch on some frequently asked questions!

How much is a trip to New Zealand cost?

The cost of a trip to New Zealand will vary depending on the length of time, type of accommodation, where you are traveling from, and the activities that you wish to do while there.

Generally speaking, a one-week trip to New Zealand for two people could cost anywhere from $1500 to $10,000+ AUD.

Speaking from experience, a one-week ski trip with my partner to Queenstown cost us around $3000 – $3500 AUD each. This includes budget accommodation, flights, ski passes, food, ski rentals, car rental, travel insurance, and activities.

The best all-inclusive trips to New Zealand that we touched on earlier will set you back around $7000 AUD for 3 nights including flights.

What time of year is the cheapest to go to New Zealand?

The cheapest time to visit New Zealand is during its low season, which is from May to September.

This is the coldest period in New Zealand so prices for flights, accommodations, and tourist activities tend to be lower during this time.

However, it’s important to note that prices can vary depending on factors such as holidays, events, and demand. In particular, if you plan on skiing sometime in June to August expect prices on and around the slopes to be high.

To get the best deals, booking in advance and being flexible with your travel dates is advisable.

How far in advance should I book a trip to New Zealand?

How far in advance you book your trip to New Zealand really depends on the time of year, the destinations you plan on visiting, and the availability of flights and accommodations.

Generally, these days it is best to book at least 6 months in advance if you want to find the best deals and get the most out of your trip.

What is New Zealand known for?

New Zealand is known for its stunning natural beauty, its diverse landscape of mountains, beaches, and forests, its unique Maori culture and traditions, its outdoor and adventure activities, its delicious cuisine, its laid-back lifestyle, and its friendly people.

Dare I go on?!

Fun fact! It is also known as the home of the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy.

When is the best time to visit New Zealand?

The best time to visit New Zealand depends on your interests and bucket list. Plus in my opinion, there really isn’t a bad time to visit the gorgeous nation.

New Zealand’s summer (December to February) is the most popular time to visit as it offers pleasant weather, with warm temperatures and longer daylight hours.

It’s an excellent time for outdoor activities such as hiking, wildlife spotting, and exploring the stunning beaches. But that being said, it’s peak tourist season, so popular destinations can be crowded, and prices are often higher.

New Zealand’s Autumn (March to May) brings mild temperatures, beautiful foliage, and fewer crowds compared to summer. It’s a great time for wine tours and enjoying cultural festivals. Prices and availability are also more favorable during this season.

New Zealand’s winter (June to August) is ideal for snow enthusiasts.

Skiing, snowboarding, and other winter sports are popular in the ski resorts of Queenstown, Wanaka, and Mt. Ruapehu.

I personally recommend the South Island during winter as the landscapes are particularly picturesque.

Lastly, we have spring (September to November) which brings mild weather, stunning blooming flowers, and fewer tourists compared to summer. It’s the perfect time for hiking as well as exploring gardens and wildlife. Prices are generally lower during this season, but the weather can be more unpredictable.

I suggest you pick the time of the year based on your travel plans and activities!

How many days should I spend in New Zealand?

How long you should spend in New Zealand really depends on what you’re looking to do and experience.

If you want to explore all of New Zealand’s beauty, I recommend at least 5-7 days. However, if your time is limited and/or you prefer to splurge on a luxurious all-inclusive trip to New Zealand you can still see a lot in just a few days.

What is the best way to get around New Zealand?

The best way to get around New Zealand is by car.

Renting a car is the best way to experience the country at your own pace and explore some of the more remote areas that can’t be reached by public transport.

It is also often the most cost-effective way to travel, as it allows you to break up your journey into smaller, more manageable parts and make stops along the way.
