Making Memories in Berlin Without Spending a Fortune: Our Budget-Friendly Trip

Guten abend!

Sticking together, shoulder to shoulder
The three guards of the night
Between the shadows in Berlin
The new chapter is now open“

Originally, this verse was written in Lithuanian, so we did our best in translation. Not the best one though, but next time it will be better. XD

16th of February – 20th of February

The chairs are empty again, as the people who are supposed to be sitting in them are in Berlin!

Captivating Night View of a Berlin Church

From Betrayal to Adventure: Exploring Berlin with Unexpected Travel Buddies

The idea to visit Berlin was not originally ours – one of our friends suggested going together to Berlin, but we eventually found out that he was not planning to have the Trip with us. His initial plan was to gather a huge crowd to have fun, but he did not even mention this to us! How dare he be so selfish! But well, we bought the tickets for the three of us and decided to go – because why not?

On the 16th of January, our plane to Berlin took off and we started yet another adventure in our lives.

The flight was a very early one (Ryanair – low fares made simple :p), so we reached Berlin pretty early – around 11 o’clock. The trains from Berlin Brandenburg airport to Berlin Centrum run every half an hour, but we managed to miss one because of the strong wind which blew us right to the smoking area. How unexpected!

Wind-blown travellers make a mad dash to McDonald’s during the city break

So, after that the wind blew us right to the underground for the train, we almost missed this one because it did not stop where we were waiting for it – what a good start to the trip :). But we, as the warriors, fought, ran, and managed to get into this one. Good news

It was a sunny day which was suggesting that we need to go straight to the city centre, but now the strong wind of hunger blew us right to McDonald’s. We stopped at a station with an unknown name, the train was just standing, and we saw the McDonald’s logo. YEAH SURE LET’S GO OUT OF THE TRAIN BECAUSE, HELLO, McDONALD’S IS HERE!!!!!

If you have a McDonald’s app which works in the whole of Europe, don’t try to get this app to work in Germany. They have a separate one so no deals this time, regular BigMac, not-so-regular wrap and curly fries.

Getting to the castle

Food, of course, made us feel better, so we left McDonald’s and headed to the city centre (Primark, to be precise :D), Alexanderplatz, the TV tower. We had a few hours left until our hostel lets us in into our room, so we decided to wander a bit, maybe get something, and, yes of course, we were lucky enough to buy some stuff

Later we started walking towards the hostel because the BACKPACKS were more than annoying, and we just had to put them already. When the hostel was reached, we quickly filled in the needed documentation and got our key to the room.

Hostel stuff

Before getting further, I would like to mention that we stayed in a very good hostel with a very reasonable price – a&o Berlin Mitte. We paid 317€ for a quadruple room for 4 nights. Additionally, we had to pay the capitation tax when we got there, but it was only 13,77€, well, not a big deal. Crazy, right?! Maybe it could have been a bit cleaner, but we are not spoiled people who need everything perfect… A cheap palace near Kit Kat, which was unfortunately not visited. But later about it!

Adventures continue

After checking into the hostel, the receptionist told us that we should not go to our room before 3 o’clock, but we could not wait because at 4 o’clock we had to be at the parliament!! So we quickly left our belongings, ran to the U-Bahn, and, thank you, God, we managed to reach the building even earlier!

The visit to the Reichstag Building was a really nice one. If you want to visit it too, the registration can be found here.

After the visit, we went to see Brandenburg gate, the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, just strolling around in the city.

After that, we went home to change our clothes, and make ourselves clean and the wandering was still on.

We did not specifically tell ourselves that we must do this and that, so it was a stroll that we were enjoying, it was not planned, and that is the best part of it!

Three knights getting some rest (or not)

After walking, we were toooo tired to go anywhere else, the step count in my app showed 37878 steps in total on the 16th of February. CRAZYYY! So we went back to the hostel to get some rest. Sitting there was too boring, so we decided to buy playing cards because we forgot to take them from home. We are madly in love with the cards, who can even hate them?! When we start to play, it can take hours before we stop.

After playing, doing random stuff and talking, we got some rest finally. And then….

Friyay and review of a Döner

I won’t lie, Thursday drained us but the best medicine is to walk more! Maybe not more, but at least a bit.

BUT first things first! I and my dearest friend wanted to buy the best thing from Lush – Twilight body spray, we would definitely recommend buying it!!! So as we are broque backpackers, we couldn’t bring it home since it’s more than 100ml. SO WE ARE NOT DUMB and we sent a package to Lithuania with our wonderful sprays so Friday literally (well at least the start of the day) was about the package. We also bought some stuff from the previously mentioned Primark and put everything we could into the package 20€ for the parcel, but definitely cheaper than buying a 10kg bag for the plane!

Wander, wander, wander… East side gallery, checking out the East side of the city. But the battery starts to need its charger. And we then decided to get the most famous Döner in Berlin – Mustafas ‘Gemüse-Kebab’. The line, as always, was crazy – we had to wait for an hour for the food, IN RAIN! But we waited… And the Döner was indeed awesome! But we maybe wouldn’t wait for an hour again to get it… But it felt like every ingredient has to be in the food and it melted so perfectly in our mouths…

Tresor

What a trip to Berlin without going to a rave? Not possible! On Friday, we decided to visit Tresor, which is A “must” for all ravers, as visitberlin.de writers state (a good site which contains a lot of nice suggestions for your trip to Berlin, would recommend checking it out) Well, an experience for sure! Hot atmosphere, lots of people dancing and being themselves. We danced. Left a bit of ourselves but took a lot out of this experience. It wasn’t the techno that we expected as it was more DnB music there, but duuh, it is Berlin and let the music be!

Saturday – 0% in the battery

After two intense days, the big Saturday was just a day off – we couldn’t move so we got breakfast in bed – 20 bottles of beer. It’s a vacation, so why not?! (just covering the fact that we maybe have a problem.. just maybe). So, nothing interesting, three lazy and tired wales drinking in bed on a beautiful day in Berlin :DD

Sunday Funday hehe

As the last day in Berlin approached, we understood that we had to get our lazy asses up and get the most we can on this day. We went to check out the Tempelhof airport and the park that is literally on the runway. Only in Berlin (correct me if I am wrong). Nothing interesting about it – we did not get inside the building, and all of the tours were sold out that day…. But a big building where you can feel the spirit of the Soviet Union After that, we, again, sorry for using the same word for thousand times, but we wandered around in Kreuzberg and Neukölln.

Experience in the most famous Techno club in the world

Reader, wanderer, fellow. While reading this blog post, did you ask yourself where is the experience of Berghain? Were they so dumb that they did not even try to get in? Well well well, surprise surprise, of course, we tried SADLY, TRIED :D. After collecting information about what to do, how to behave, and when to go, we decided that Sunday evening is the best time to go.

After wandering in the daytime, at around 7 o’clock we did Camino Berghainico – a trip to the club that even Elon Musk was refused to entry, SO WERE WE but! The best part is that the bodyguards were thinking if they should let us in. After waiting for an hour and finally reaching the doors, we could see that the bodyguards were discussing whether they should let us in or not, so it is better than a straight NO to your face. We think that we got 2 YES and 1 BIG NO from the chief of bodyguards

Maybe the problem was that there were 3 of us? Maybe we were talking a bit in the line? Maybe because we did not look ravers enough (for this I would gladly argue)? WHO KNOWS! But at least we tried…

For sure another wander and a random visit to Radisson

After getting the NO and seeing that there is not much time left in Berlin, we decided to get to our castle (aka hostel), and change the beautiful Berghain outfits into something more baby it’s cold outside and I need some warmth and get another yet the last wander in Berlin.

We were thinking about going to Kit Kat (another techno club in Berlin), but we decided that it would be best if the tale would be finished with getting the hype down. NOT UP I think if we have decided to go, we would have missed our flight, jobs, and lives for a good rave, you know how it is

But we are not boring people, so we had to put a cherry on top of this trip, and my friend was like:

My aunt always visits Radisson cause it’s always the best view of the city there.

Well, I can imagine it is! So we decided to go to Radisson. The terrasse for 7€/person was already closed, but we, the knights/sneaky bastards, went to the elevator with some guy and got to the 32nd floor. Sadly, we could not see a lot, but the view was crazy cool

The end

After the wanders, we went back to the hostel, bought the last bottle of wine from an Arabic guy, drank it and headed to the airport… SO SAD… THE TRIP IS DONE… BUT THE WORST PART is that we had to get to Vilnius from Riga. That’s about 300km and approximately 3.5 hours. JESUS! I couldn’t proceed with the driving, so my dearest friend took over from the border of Lithuania. And yes, the end…

Numbers, random facts and tips

  • A brilliant idea of 12 months of adventures was born in Berlin. So we already started with Berlin, then we go somewhere else, and let’s keep it up bitches!
  • Entrance to Tresor – 20€, Bergain – 25€
  • The total count of steps from my phone – 106863, which is 65 km!
  • Aldi is the best shop ever for a broke person
  • NEVER BUY ALCOHOL FROM RANDOM SHOPS – GO TO ALDI! A random shop will have 3 times higher than Aldi :))
  • In total, 3 of us spent approx. 1000€. Not a lot, but we could have saved some money, example above
  • Keep in mind that the supermarkets and shops are not working on Sunday. It’s a law in Germany!
  • 24-hour ticket for all the transportation in Berlin for zones A, B and C costs 10€, zone A and B only – 8.90€. Not a big deal

Anything else should be added? Did you feel that we did not tell enough or told too much? Please leave a comment and I will get better, or maybe not.

Until another adventure!
