TULUM, Quintana Roo – Miguel Ramírez, the Coordinator of Policy Advocacy in Mexico, has identified Cancún, Tulum, and Playa del Carmen as the three cities in Quintana Roo with the highest incidence of child labor exploitation. Speaking at the conclusion of the “Symposium on Child Labor” held in Playa del Carmen, Ramírez highlighted that these cities attract hundreds of families from other states who engage in informal work that involves the use of underage children.

In the majority of cases, these children are employed in selling products in the bustling tourist areas, taking advantage of their innocent charm to attract buyers. Ramírez, while acknowledging that he didn’t have recent data readily available, asserted that child labor exploitation has significantly increased since 2017, despite the existence of legislation intended to combat this issue.

The dire situation prevalent in these aforementioned cities underscores the urgent need to identify such cases and ensure that responsible authorities take appropriate measures to address the needs of the affected minors. “It is not enough to remove them from Fifth Avenue or the beaches; we must also provide them with essential services,” emphasized Ramírez. He stressed the importance of offering educational programs, social initiatives, and other support systems to safeguard the well-being and future prospects of these exploited children.

While Quintana Roo has long been celebrated for its pristine beaches and vibrant tourism industry, the dark underbelly of child labor exploitation casts a shadow on the region’s reputation. The prevalence of this issue in the state’s most populous cities necessitates immediate and concerted action from authorities, civil society organizations, and the public at large.

Child labor exploitation not only violates international human rights standards but also undermines the principles of fairness, equality, and compassion that Quintana Roo aspires to uphold.
