The U.S. Embassy in Mexico issued a Travel Alert for its citizens during spring break, warning of security risks for those traveling to Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum. This is the second travel alert involving the state. The first was due to cab driver attacks on Uber.
On this occasion, the U.S. government is asking tourists to exercise caution derived from the violence in Quintana Roo: this one includes the destinations of Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
According to the travel alert, U.S. citizens should exercise extra caution in the downtown areas of popular spring break locations, especially after dark.
They also touch on drugs, which can be deadly to those who consume them, possible unregulated alcohol and could be a risk and even counterfeit pharmaceuticals, sexual assaults, arrests to mention a few.
They also asked to identify areas at risk of crime, which can occur anywhere in Mexico, even in popular tourist destinations.
The alert asks travelers to maintain a high level of situational awareness, avoid areas where illicit activities occur and move quickly away from potentially dangerous situations.
Tourism from the United States accounts for 37% of arrivals to Quintana Roo and is the number one source market for visitors to the Mexican Caribbean.
The alert also recommends tourists to download the Guest Assist application on their phone when visiting the destinations of Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cozumel or other areas of the state of Quintana Roo, where assistance is provided to tourists.
The embassy even suggests tourists to use transportation apps, in order to avoid further risk.
This travel alert is issued within the framework of a visit by Dorothy Ngutter, Consul General of the United States, who was present at a meeting with businessmen from Quintana Roo and government authorities.
The first travel alert issued this year was at the end of January, derived from attacks by cab drivers against drivers of the digital platform Uber.
