Massive Winter Storm Bringing 2-3 Feet of Snow to Denver & Front Range

DENVER, COLORADO – A formidable winter storm is poised to sweep across Denver and the Colorado mountains this Wednesday through Friday, as forecasted by the National Weather Service. With winter storm warnings in effect for the North Central Mountains, Front Range Foothills, South Park, the Denver-Boulder Area, and Palmer Ridge, residents and travelers should prepare for a significant snow event that could disrupt Travel and daily life.

What to Expect

Heavy snowfall is anticipated to blanket the region midday Wednesday, continuing through Friday morning. The mountains and foothills are expected to receive 1 to 4 feet of snow, while the Palmer Ridge area could see 1 to 2 feet. The Greater Denver-Boulder area is bracing for 8 to 20 inches of snow accumulation by the storm’s conclusion.

Travel is predicted to be very difficult to impossible, particularly from Wednesday night through Friday morning. The Denver Metro area, foothills, and Palmer Divide are likely to face the brunt of travel disruptions. Power outages are a possibility, and mountain and foothill travel may be impassable for several days. However, warmer temperatures and drier conditions forecasted for the weekend should aid recovery efforts in the hardest-hit areas.

Avalanche Watch In Effect

Adding to the severity, the Colorado Avalanche Information Center has issued an Avalanche Watch for the Front Range mountains, effective from Tuesday evening through Friday morning. Heavy snow and strong winds are expected to create perilous avalanche conditions, with widespread and long-traveling avalanches anticipated. Avalanche terrain travel is strongly discouraged during this period.

Safety Tips and Preparations

As the region braces for the storm, residents and travelers are urged to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and well-being. Here are some essential safety tips:

  1. Avoid Unnecessary Travel: Postpone or cancel travel plans in the affected areas from Wednesday through Friday. If you must travel, be prepared for emergencies.
  2. Emergency Kits: Ensure your home and vehicle are equipped with emergency kits containing essentials such as food, water, a flashlight, batteries, and a first-aid kit.
  3. Stay Informed: Keep up-to-date with the latest weather forecasts and road conditions via local news and the National Weather Service. Colorado road conditions can be checked by calling 511 or visiting www.cotrip.org.
  4. Home Preparedness: Secure your home against potential power outages by having alternative light sources available and ensuring your heating system is in good working order. Prevent freezing pipes by keeping your home warm and letting faucets drip slightly during extreme cold.
  5. Avalanche Awareness: Heed the Avalanche Watch and avoid backcountry travel in the mountains. Be aware of avalanche risks if residing in or near prone areas.

Meteorologists like 9News’ Chris Bianchi emphasize the severity of the incoming storm, describing it as “a beast of a storm.” With the community’s safety in mind, residents are encouraged to prepare accordingly and stay vigilant during this significant winter weather event.
