Khajjiar is one of the few places in the world where nothing else but snow falls. With a population of a mere 2000 people, Khajjiar is situated 30 kms from Manali and is surrounded by the high Himalayas in all directions. Khajjiar has a unique history to it and dates back to the times when Lord Shiva was still there on this earth.
It is said that Lord Shiva stopped here on his way back from Satya Loka ( Heaven) with his consort Goddess Parvati and they enjoyed their time in this place so much that they decided to stay there forever. This place soon became known as ‘Khajjee’ which later became Khajjiar. The local people still believe that if you sit here for long enough on any given night, you will hear the voice of Lord Shiva coming out of some distant mountains singing a romantic.

ऐसा कहा जाता है कि भगवान शिव अपनी पत्नी देवी पार्वती के साथ सत्य लोक (स्वर्ग) से लौटते समय यहां रुके थे और उन्होंने इस स्थान पर अपने समय का इतना आनंद लिया कि उन्होंने हमेशा के लिए वहीं रहने का फैसला किया। यह स्थान जल्द ही 'खज्जी' के नाम से जाना जाने लगा जो बाद में खज्जियार बन गया। स्थानीय लोगों का अब भी मानना है कि यदि आप किसी भी रात यहां काफी देर तक बैठते हैं, तो आपको कुछ दूर पहाड़ों से भगवान शिव की आवाज एक रोमांटिक गीत गाते हुए सुनाई देगी।
