ROTTERDAM…….A MODERN CITY WITH A RICH HISTORY.

Luckily first week of April,2023 was a long week end,(Easter)so we decided to spend these 3 days to visit ROTTERDAM.We drove via  E19 and it took 3 hours and 40 minutes to reach our destination.Rotterdam is a city that really has it all. This vibrant metropolis in the west of the Netherlands is known for its stunning modern architecture, busy port and thriving arts and culture scene. But Rotterdam is also a city with a rich history, stretching back centuries, and there are many fascinating sights and attractions that offer a glimpse into the city’s past..One of the most iconic landmarks in Rotterdam is the Erasmus Bridge, which spans the Nieuwe Maas River and gives amazing panoramic views of the city. This modern-day suspension bridge is a testomony to Rotterdam’s dedication to innovation and progress, and it is a must-see for everyone travelling the city.Rotterdam Harbour: As one of the largest ports in the world, Rotterdam’s harbour is definitely worth visiting. You can take a boat tour to see the massive ships and containers up close, or simply stroll along the waterfront and enjoy the views.Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen: This art museum features an impressive collection of works by Dutch and European artists, including paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts.Today, Rotterdam is home to a diverse population of over 600,000 people, and is known for its modern architecture, bustling port, and thriving arts and cultural scene.

Another must-visit attraction in Rotterdam is the Markthal, a colorful indoor market that’s home to over 100 food stalls, shops, and restaurants. The Markthal is housed in a striking arch-shaped building that’s covered in a massive mural by Dutch artist Arno Coenen, and it’s a great place to sample some of the delicious local cuisine.For those interested in history, Rotterdam also has a number of museums and historic sites worth exploring. The Maritime Museum offers a fascinating look at the city’s seafaring history, while the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen features an impressive collection of art from Dutch and European masters. The old harbor district of Delfshaven is also worth a visit, with its charming canals and historic buildings.

Making long story short,Throughout its history, Rotterdam has played an important role as a trading center, thanks to its strategic location on the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Rotterdam was a major hub for the Dutch East India Company, which traded in spices, textiles, and other goods from Asia.During World War II, Rotterdam was heavily bombed and suffered significant damage, including the destruction of its historic city center. However, the city quickly rebuilt and has since become a major economic and cultural center in the Netherlands, as well as a key port and transportation hub in Europe
