Malta – Don’t forget to visit the south of the island

On holiday in Malta? Then don’t forget to visit the south of the island. Iconic places such as Blue Grotto and Marsaxlokk are impossible to ignore. Take a taxi, rental car or bus and preferably travel to these attractions on a Sunday.

Catch of the day

There are plenty of fishing villages in Malta, but the most important fishing village is undoubtedly Marsaxlokk. A long promenade provides beautiful views of the sea and the colorful fishing boats. These traditional boats are also called Luzzu and are still in daily use. The painted eyes at the front of the boats are striking. They should protect fishermen.

On Sunday, Marsaxlokk’s crowd barometer goes up. The weekly fish market is then marked in the agenda of tourists and locals. Even the chefs of well-known eateries come here to choose their fish. It’s almost impossible to get fresher and local fish restaurants respond to that. Don’t hesitate and ask for the ‘catch of the day’. The catch of the day will be proudly presented to you on a large board. Something for everyone!

Blue Grotto from the sea

Other attractions in Marsaxlokk include the Parish Church and the St. Lucian Tower. Just outside the village you can visit St. Peter’s Pool. Ideal for diving and snorkeling, but we opt for Blue Grotto in Wied iz-Zurrieq. Also a nice place for diving and snorkeling, but especially for boat trips and enjoying the breathtaking nature.

Because of the rough sea, seven caves were formed in the rocks. This is how Blue Grotto was born. Especially on beautiful days, the sunlight provides a true spectacle, but you only get a good picture of the entire cave system during a boat trip. Blue Grotto Boat Service takes you for a short 20 minute tour along the South Maltese coastline. A must-do!
