If you are not on a large budget, there are free activities you can partake and immerse in the charm without spending a single yen. Here are some free things to enjoy in Hokkaido:

The Nature Parks

For sure, there are many things to do in Hokkaido. The landscape in Hokkaido is splendid. It features many amazing parks. Take a deep breath and take a view from these spots:

1. Odori Park: Situated 1.5km south of Sapporo Station, Odori Park is an open place for leisure and relaxation with twelve sections designated for cultural and social events.

It has tree-lined pathways, and spaces for blanket-laying and seasonal celebrations. To get to the park, use the Namboku or Toho metro lines, which include above- and below-ground walkways, after a 35-minute quick airport train to Sapporo Station.

2. Shikotsu-Toya National: Lake Toya, the beautiful blend of nature, is declared a UNESCO World Heritage in Hokkaido. The two lakesides found within the parameters—beautiful lakes, Toya and Shikotsu—are set between volcanic mountains and green forests.

Many things to do are a drive or hike through volcanic mountains, lush forests, and wetlands for a wonderful scenic view of landscapes. A dip in the hot springs of Shikotsu Onsen. Camp, fish, or go boating outside.

3. Moerenuma Park: A repurposed waste disposal site in Sapporo, is a stunning art wonderland designed by sculptor Isamu Noguchi.

The park features rolling hills, a giant pyramid, and various sculptures. Accessible via bus and subway from Sapporo Station, visitors can take a 6-minute Toho metro train to Kanjo Dori Higashi and transfer to Ainosato Kyoikudai Station.

4. Shirogane Blue Pond: The Biei River Dam, built in 1988 to prevent volcanic mud from reaching Biei, is a natural beauty with an incredible blue color.

The canal’s hue varies from milky light blue to deep green turquoise, depending on climate and season. This rare and exquisite sight in Hokkaido is the only canal to exhibit this beautiful blue color. The surrounding trees, especially in fall, create a pretty frame.

5. Cape Soya: This cape is also known as the “Caid of Dreams.” It lies dramatically at the northernmost point of Hokkaido. Things to do include a scenic drive or hike to the cape and a visit to the Cape Soya Lighthouse.

Also a visit to the nearby Wakkanai Wetland, a habitat for various waterbirds and savoring fresh seafood at local restaurants. Stand at the monument and look out at the endless horizon, feeling on top of the world.
