The 18 Best Cafes in Leeds (A Local’s Guide)

THE BEST CAFÉS IN LEEDS

08 Oct 2023   ||   YORKSHIRE

Leeds, West Yorkshire, is a vastly underrated city in the United Kingdom. It features a little bit of everything, from London-quality architecture to classy art museums and boutique restaurants and all without the tourist hordes of York and the Dales’ villages. In particular, one thing the city of Leeds has in abundance, is cafés. Whether you are looking for the perfect cup of artisanal coffee, some quirky décor, vegetarian/vegan food options or just a super unique experience, this vibrant city has it all.

Although we write about places from all over the world, Leeds is our home and we’ve visited more cafés here than we can count. So, this is a little shout-out to the absolute best independent cafés across the city of Leeds, categorising them into handy sections to help you choose which are best for your trip (or maybe you’ll try to visit them all!). I’m not a coffee fan, but I am a cake, brunch and hot chocolate lover, while Nick is a coffee aficionado and obsesses about every cup (he’ll also never say no to brunch). This means that, between us, we’ve checked out everything these cafés in Leeds have to offer!

We’ve noted if a café is dog-friendly, whether it has quality, thoughtful vegetarian/vegan options and which we loved the most in each section. Check out our equivalent favourite restaurants in Leeds list for even more places to visit!

OUR FAVOURITE CAFéS IN LEEDS

⋅ BEST CAFÉS IN LEEDS FOR A CRACKING BRUNCH ⋅

These cafés all excel when it comes to food. If you’re heading out in Leeds specifically for some incredible brunchy-lunchy options – give these a go.

Laynes Espresso – a classic venue near Leeds train station, this central café does some wicked Turkish eggs, shakshuka and corn fritters, all presented exquisitely and accompanied by excellent, high-quality coffees. Don’t let the food fool you though – this barista-owned venue prioritises their coffee. We recommend literally all the vegetarian options on the menu – seriously! If you are feeling indulgent, try the rarebit. Find Laynes at 16 New Station Street, Leeds LS1 5DL.

Moose Coffee – if you’re after the artery-blocking breakfast of dreams, look no further. Dog friendly, this café channels the typical U.S.A./Canadian mega-breakfast – with the most outrageous menu, including a lot of original vegetarian choices. It even does Coke floats! Just go online and look at the menu – I dare you! Find Moose Coffee at Bond Court, Wine Street, Leeds LS1 2JZ.

Loaf Far Headingley – this laid-back little place (previously Sebby’s) with cute outdoor seating is often super busy, especially at weekends. It boasts a superb, imaginative, vegetarian-heavy menu, fresh cakes and nice, lively vibes. Definitely visit on a sunny day – it’s one of our favourite spots in Headingley! We recommend anything with the Loaf beans and the incredible Turkish eggs. Find Loaf at 90-92 Otley Road, Headingley, Leeds LS6 4BA.

Olive and Rye – this extremely popular city centre spot in one of Leeds’ classic shopping arcades serves classic brunch dishes with a twist, accompanied by top quality coffee in an impeccably designed venue. The staff here are probably the friendliest in town and the perfectly brewed, aromatic coffee is just the cherry on top. We recommend the vegan tofu scramble with the vegan breakfast and the avo toast. The spicy hollandaise sauce is also superb. Find Olive and Rye at Queens Arcade, 18-20 Briggate, Leeds LS1 6LF.

Archive – just a little out from the city centre, this fantastic café is hidden away on a back street near one of our favourite breweries and restaurants in Leeds, so you’re not likely to just spot it passing by. Modern but relaxed, this venue has quiet outdoor seating, a cosy front bar area and a large backroom for events; they also have film showings and art exhibitions. We absolutely recommend the outstanding large vegan brunch with black garlic mushrooms and the beetroot latte! Find Archive at 94 Kirkstall Road, Leeds LS3 1HD.

House of Koko – a beautifully decorated, airy café with truly excellent veggie options and an incredibly diverse menu. The presentation and individuality of the food alone is worth a visit – I think it could be one of our favourites on this list! There’s a second Koko location in Oakwood which we haven’t visited yet, with an equally exciting menu, that we are sure will be just as fantastic. Find Koko at 62 Harrogate Road, Chapel Allerton, Leeds LS7 4LA.

Our Stand-Out Café: Very, very tricky but Olive and Rye *just* pips it

Best dish: Corn fritters from Laynes

Best cakes: Archive

Nicest Vibes: Torn between Olive and Rye and Koko

⋅ BEST CAFÉS IN LEEDS FOR AN ARTISANAL COFFEE ⋅

If coffee is your priority and nothing but the best will do, consider checking out one of these cafés in Leeds:

200 Degrees Coffee Shop and Barista School – probably the best place in Leeds for the ultimate cup of speciality coffee. You can buy some top quality beans here or even take a barista class! It’s *all* about the coffee quality and the passion for it really shows through, although the cakes and smoothies we had were hardly a disappointment either. A dog friendly place. Find 200 Degrees at 31 Bond Street, Leeds LS1 5BQ.

Kulture Coffee – this cosy contemporary establishment, in an unassuming area of Kirkstall in west Leeds (pretty close to our house luckily!), is not where you’d expect to find an exceptional artisanal coffee house. Situated opposite a Starbucks, this independently owned business is light-years ahead of the big international brand. Although it specialises in high quality coffee, try one of the creative volcano cookies – they’re out of this world. They are dog friendly and also do a quality range of beans to takeaway too. All our local friends absolutely swear by this place! Find Kulture at 380 Kirkstall Road, Burley, Leeds LS4 2HQ.

Fika North – (pronounced ‘Feekah’), with a modern, cool, Scandinavian feel, is just a stone’s throw from Loaf in the brunch section of our list! However, this Leeds café is certainly the better of the two for a proper speciality cup of coffee (in our honest opinion). They also serve some creatively filled bagels – fantastic for a light lunch option. They are dog friendly too. Find Fika at 94 Otley Road, Headingley, Leeds LS6 4BA.

Stage Espresso & Brewbar – try the Nitro cold brew, or anything else on the beverage menu for that matter – this place serves simply fantastic coffee. I also had a particularly special home-baked granola bar there. There’s a simple but tasty food menu with some decent veggie options too. This place is often quieter than other city centre cafés (although not at lunchtime). For dog lovers there’s even a resident beagle. Find Stage at 41 Great George Street, Leeds LS1 3BB.

Miles and Co Coffee – although we’ve only ever had a takeaway from Miles, we’d be remiss to leave it off our artisan coffee list. It’s well-known for having the highest quality coffee in Leeds and the most knowledgeable owners – you’ll find it located at the top of the covered section of Kirkgate market. If you are new to Leeds, grab a coffee while exploring one of the largest indoor markets in Europe! They have a small seating area and some great bakery options too. Find Miles and Co at Unit 21, Market Hall, Vicar Lane, Leeds LS2 7HJ.

Mrs Atha’s – from eclectic music choices to the mood lighting and eccentric décor, this city centre Leeds café definitely does things a little differently to others. The exceptionally cordial staff, flawless cups of coffee and a menu chock-full of vegan options puts this café up there with the best in Leeds, without a doubt. Try the pancakes, they’re incredible. Find Mrs Atha’s at 18 Central Road, Leeds LS1 6DE.

Our Stand-Out Café: 200 Degrees

Best Coffee: Fika

Best cakes: Kulture

Nicest Vibes: Mrs Atha’s

⋅ BEST CAFÉS IN LEEDS - THE QUIRKY OPTIONS ⋅

For some fun, community and creativity, check out these eclectic places that we’ve had the pleasure of visiting during our time in Leeds. Each has something special about them, but also serve some epic food and drinks! Check them out:

Mr Tea – okay, so this isn’t a coffee house as such, but we treat bubble tea kind of like coffee, so here it is! It’s our favourite bubble tea place in Leeds (and we’ve tried them all), there are just so many options and all the combinations (that we’ve tried) are incredible. I love that you can choose your drink’s sugar level and that there are vegan friendly versions too. The décor with its modern yet homely vibes upstairs are just perfect too. I should also mention that they do some pretty incredible Taiwanese meals and snacks too! Find Mr Tea at 21 Albion Place, Leeds LS1 6JS.

Wapentake – part coffee shop, part pub-restaurant, part craft beer bar, this little place is special in all the best ways. With homely décor, a piano, walls pasted with craft beer mats and even some antique guns, Wapentake is a place where you enter and feel like you’ve found a hidden treasure, all to yourself. They also had the best-tasting cake of any place on this entire list (probably the least good-looking though – presentation is not their forte!). Find Wapentake at 92 Kirkgate, Leeds LS2 7DJ.

Vinyl Whistle – vinyl heaven accompanied by a decent coffee (or a beer)! Some of the Google reviews are less than stellar because the owner was a football ref apparently and some (childish) people disagreed with his decisions and decided to review bomb the business. Ignore them and check this place out, especially if you’re a music fan. It also has small gigs on – check on their website. Find Vinyl Whistle at 12 Otley Road, Headingley, Leeds LS6 2AD.

Humbl Coffee – a newish (2022), crowdsourced café with awesome coffee and cake (very vegan-friendly), a community book swap, all while being exceptionally dog friendly. There’s lots of local artwork on display and the garden deck is particularly lovely in the sunshine! This place is also a pretty friendly place to whip out your laptop for a little bit of that unfortunate screen-based labour we all have to do. We love that this Leeds café also has a cute little roving coffee van. Find Humbl Coffee at 38 Monk Bridge Rd, Meanwood, Leeds LS6 4ER.

Flamingos Coffee House – this super-welcoming, city-centre, LGBTQ+ friendly café is a peaceful haven for alternative folks and allies, with gender-neutral facilities, queer event promotions and late-night community spaces. Better still, they give proceeds from products to queer charities. You can’t go wrong with a slice of rainbow cake accompanied by a cracking coffee. This Leeds café is fantastic from a price-point perspective too! Find Flamingos at 10 Central Arcade, Leeds LS1 6DX.

Left Bank Leeds – a brilliant multi-purpose community space located inside a former church, with a big garden out the front with lots of seating. This place is a little different – it’s been used for poetry readings, gigs, beer and cider festivals and even as a wedding venue. It is the heart of the community where I live! On a casual day, it’s an outstanding choice to pick up a coffee and do some work or read a book, especially in the summer on the front lawn. Pair a trip here with the retro community Hyde Park Picture House just around the corner – the oldest gaslit cinema in the world, showing classic and new films daily. Find Left Bank at Cardigan Road, Burley, Leeds LS6 1LJ.

Our Stand-Out Café: Wapentake

Best dish: Anything from Mr Tea!

Best Coffee: Humbl Coffee

Best cakes: Wapentake (spinach and pepper cake changed my life)

Nicest Vibes: Flamingos

FINAL THOUGHTS

Cafés are far more than just a place for quality coffee, at least in the United Kingdom. Here, they are also a place to pick up some super artisanal food, often well below the equivalent restaurant prices, complemented by friendly welcoming faces that (almost always) love to pet your dog. They’re a communal space where we go to sit, ponder and plan – although I guess maybe that’s the case for most of the world?

Having spent time in cafés around the world, one of the things I’ve noticed, specifically about independent places in the U.K., is the food. This country genuinely serves some of the best vegetarian brunches and vegan cakes in the world and Leeds’ thriving independent coffee scene certainly lives up to that (self-imposed) status!

We hope you enjoy your time at these Leeds cafés as much as we do. Get out there and support your independently owned businesses!
