Education in Greece

Education in Greece is free and compulsory for all children aged 6 to 15. The education system is divided into primary and secondary education. For lower secondary education, the government provides tuition-free schools.

There are also private and intercultural schools. Intercultural schools are based on intercultural communication and emphasize the educational needs of students. These schools cater to migrants and immigrant children.

In Greece, the public education system is supervised by the Ministry of Education. The Ministry of Education has information in English, Greek and Arabic. Several model schools have been supported by the Ministry. This includes experimental schools, schools of special education, minority schools, and model schools for migrant children.

Higher education in Greece is available to both Greeks and foreigners. A degree from a Greek university is considered equivalent to a degree from a university in another country. Most people attend state-run public schools. Private schools are independent non-state schools. They are usually funded by the state, but some are funded privately.

Primary schools in Greece

Education in Greece is compulsory for all children. The first stage of the education system is early education and care for schoolchildren up to the age of six. Secondary education begins when a student reaches twelve years of age and continues until he or she enters college or university.

In 1995, 138 primary schools and 39 preschools were operating in Greece. For the year 1995-1996, the school year was September 11 to June 15 for the primary school sector and September 1 to June 30 for the secondary school sector.

The primary education system in Greece is divided into three levels: Early Education and Care, Primary Education and Secondary Education. At the primary level, students attend five days a week for five hours a day. Each year, objectives are set for the students. They are designed to promote their cognitive, physical and moral development. Among the goals for the primary school are the development of communication skills, creative abilities, and the appreciation of aesthetics in all art forms.

Primary schools also address the education of special needs students. These students are placed in an inclusion class with a special-needs teacher. Aside from this, they may attend a special-needs junior high school.

Junior high schools in Greece

Greece has an education system that comprises three main stages: primary, secondary and tertiary education. The Greek Constitution stipulates that all children between the ages of 6 and 15 must attend school.

Primary schools offer basic skills in a variety of subjects. Most Junior High Schools focus on foreign language learning.

There are also special needs primary schools that cater for students with physical or mental impairments. In addition, there are Vocational Training Schools that offer adult-focused programs. These are designed to train and prepare students for vocational and career training.

Unlike American Junior High Schools, the Gymnasium (secondary school) in Greece lasts for only three years. Students can leave school before the end of this stage if they wish. Alternatively, they can continue to the fourth year of high school.

Secondary school consists of two substages: Lykeio and Ptychio. Lykeio is the academically oriented high school. Those who want to pursue studies in Higher Education take Panhellenic exams.

In addition, Vocational Evening High School is a four-year program that combines academic studies with vocational training. This school is offered by Technological Educational Institutes.

In Greece, private schools have more autonomy than public ones. They are still supervised by the Ministry of Education.
