Top 5 FAQs on British citizenship application 2022

When you apply for British Citizenship you must fulfill the age requirement of 18 years and above and hold current Indefinite leave to Remain(ILR). If you meet these two you can begin your British citizenship application.

In this article, we will be discussing top 5 FAQs which our clients have often struggled with during their application.

What should be the first step?

Undoubtedly, the ILR application comes first and then after staying for 12 months on active ILR you may apply for British citizenship.

You can apply for British Citizenship as long as you possess an active Indefinite Leave to Remain if you are married to a UK citizen.

All of the additional criteria for British Citizenship through Naturalisation mentioned by the Home Office must be met.

  • You must have been free of immigration time limits for at least 12 months immediately before the date of your application if you are not married to a British citizen.

Time spent outside the UK for British Citizenship?

You must not have lived outside the UK for more than 270 days in the previous three years if you are married to a UK national.

You should have spent no more than 90 days outside the UK during the 12 months immediately preceding the date of your application for British Citizenship through Naturalisation in order to qualify for British Citizenship.

If you are not married to a UK citizen, you must also not have lived outside the UK borders for more than 450 days in the past 5 years.

Do I need a referee for my application?

When applying for UK citizenship, you will need to mention 2 referees as a compulsory part of the process of Naturalisation. Referees could be people of any country. One of them could be Uk citizen with a valid passport and preferably above 25 years of age. Another person could be a person of high professional standing, a senior government official, any barrister, who may be representing your case.

Fees and processing time for British citizenship applications

Many of our clients ask us the time duration for the decision to come out. The British citizenship application process is quite tedious and time consuming. At times it could appear overwhelming especially when the UK Home Office demands any additional information on your application which may not be included earlier.

Usually you should hear about your application within 6 months. Sometimes it may even get delayed beyond 6 months.

An application for Naturalisation for UK citizenship costs £1,330 payable at the Home Office. An additional £80 will be required to arrange a citizenship ceremony.

Can I travel abroad during my application processing time?

Anyone can travel outside the UK while their application is ongoing if you already have applied for British citizenship. You can submit a copy of your current passport and preserve your original passport when applying for British citizenship. You can then travel internationally using your original passport.
