Where we stayed in Tuscany & why you should visit the region!

Tuscany is the picturesque winery Region in Italy located between Florence and Rome. Filled with rolling hills, charming historic towns, vineyards everywhere, lots of stunning villas and much more! Come to Tuscany for the wine and small towns, and stay for the day trips and impressive villas where you can spend the night. Read about our experience in Tuscany, including the villa we stayed (highly recommended), and why we would visit again!

Should you stay in Tuscany?

Yes! We stayed in the heart of the Chianti wine region and loved the experience, particularly staying amoungst the vineyards at a beautiful villa called Castello Vicchiomaggio. You can read more about our stay below, but if you are considering visiting, we found this villa excellent and affordable considering how lux some accommodation can get in the region. It was well located to the popular San Gimignano and other towns nearby (e.g. Monteriggioni).

Castello Vicchiomaggio – A night in Tuscan Paradise

If you aren’t fixed on Castello Vicchiomaggio, take a look at a few other amazing picks we have checked out but didn’t end up staying in.

  • Borgo Del Luigi: The highly rated and picturesque Borgo Del Luigi is a popular stay in the Chianti region. Located in Monteriggioni, this stay is definitely one to consider. Take a look here.

Where to road trip and visit in Tuscany?

There are so many amazing locations to visit, and you are unlikely to get to all of them. However, we urge you to consider hiring a car rather than public transport, as this will allow you to see more different towns, and beat the crowds that roll in on tour busses etc. A few locations that may be worth checking out include:

  • San Gimignano
  • Lucca
  • Monteriggioni
  • Montepulciano
  • Val D’Orcia
  • Chianti Region
  • Saturnia Hot Springs
  • Sienna
  • Pitigliano

To avoid? Pisa? We found the famous Pisa to be overrated. The tower is quirky and unique, but the rest of the town doesn’t offer that much, and overall, it’s probably one to skip if you visit.

Why we would return to Tuscany?

Firstly, it’s beautiful! The rolling hills and charming towns are so memorable. Secondly, the wine! Some of the best in the world! Thirdly, it’s a day trip and small town lovers (like us) dream! Plus, there’s countless of amazing villas to stay the night! And additionally, while we explored a number of great locations, there were many we also missed, including Val D’Orcia, Montepulciano, Pitigliano and more that we would love to return and visit.
