History of Gorakhnath Mandir

The history of Gorakhnath Mandir (Gorakhnath Temple) is deeply rooted in ancient traditions and spiritual significance. The temple is dedicated to Guru Gorakhnath, a revered saint and yogi who played a pivotal role in the development of the Nath tradition. Here is an overview of the historical journey of Gorakhnath Mandir:

It is mentioned in history that Alauddin Khilji in the 14th century and then Aurangzeb in the 18th century attacked this temple and tried to destroy it. Some parts of the temple were damaged but Hindu rituals and traditions were kept alive here.

In the 19th century, this temple was renovated by the devotees with the help of late Mahant Digvijay Nath and Mahant Avedyanath. The importance of this temple can be understood from the fact that this district was named Gorakhpur after the name of Baba Gorakhnath.

Architecture of Gorakhnath Mandir

Steeped in history, the Gorakhnath Temple, dating back to the twelfth century, stands as an architectural marvel and serves as the central Peeth of the Nath sect.

Within the vast temple complex, numerous smaller temples echo the grandeur of its design. The main temple, characterized by its rectangular shape, boasts a spacious hall supported by round pillars.

At the heart of the sanctum lies an idol of Guru Gorakshnath, positioned on a white marble platform in a serene meditation posture.

Adjacent to this sacred spot, one can find the Guru’s footwear, symbolizing his divine presence. The temple’s walls, adorned with inscriptions of verses by Guru Gorakhshnath, narrate a spiritual tale preserved through the sands of time.

Adding to the spiritual ambiance, the temple complex unfolds to the south-east, revealing the sacred pond known as Mansarovar.

Originally intended for bathing, this divine water body has been transformed into a peaceful boating place under the thoughtful care of the temple authorities.

Throughout the centuries, the temple’s shape and structure have undergone metamorphoses, yet the essence of its original form has endured. In 1896, a significant restoration took place after surviving attempts at demolition during the Mughal era.

In subsequent years, the temple witnessed transformative endeavors led by Mahant Aweiydya Nath and Mahant Digvijay Nath, resulting in the resplendent structure that stands today—a testament to the enduring spirit of Gorakhnath Temple’s timeless architecture.”
