  • Trekking from Chopta to Tungnath

The trek to Chopta starts right on the road, surrounded by numerous dhabas and guest houses. As soon as the trek begins, trees welcome the visitor, and an endless array of snow-capped peaks can be seen on the left side. The entire trek from Chopta to Tungnath and Chandrashila is relatively easy and does not require the services of a guide. Beautiful meadows appear around 45 minutes into the trek. There are 3-4 dhabas here that offer tea, coffee, food, and packaged snacks. These dhabas also serve as basic shelters at night and can be useful in case of an emergency or accident.

The trail twists and turns around this point, steadily climbing and gaining altitude. Along the way, there are a few spots where one can sit and appreciate the views of the snowy peaks. Those fortunate might even catch a glimpse of the state bird of Uttarakhand, the colourful Monal, on the slopes near Tungnath Temple. As you climb beyond 3100m, approximately halfway to Tungnath, the tree cover diminishes, and it can become quite warm with the bright sun. Ensure you have enough water for the trek, especially for beginners.

Keep in mind that the altitude of Chandrashila is 4000m, and one may feel the effects of AMS (Altitude Mountain Sickness). Keep water handy, and if any discomfort arises, slowly trek back to Tungnath and have a cup of black tea. Peak views are usually clear until noon, after which the clouds might hide the snowy mountains. Therefore, it is advisable to reach Chandrashila as early as possible for a clear view of the peaks from both the Kumaon and Garhwal ranges.

Some of the peaks visible from Chandrashila Top include Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, Nandaghunti, Thalaysagar, Dunagiri, Kamet, Kedar Dome, and a few more. Cairns made with rocks and shillings are spread on Chandrashila Top, creating a serene environment for a meditative experience.
