Saraswati Puja – Worship to the God of knowledge and creativity

Saraswati Puja is an auspices worship for Goddess Saraswati and celebrates Basanta Panchami’s day. Goddess Saraswati is known as the God of education and creativity in Nepal. This festival celebrates as welcoming to the spring season and the holy celebration. The Spring season is the king of all seasons.

People worship Goddess Saraswati to get success in Education, art, Knowledge, music, and learning. In Nepal, this day is considered for Kids to learn to write something new, by pen, marker on paper, or by Chak on the wall. What people believe is that whoever starts to write on the occasion of Basanta Panchami will be the scholar.

According to the Hindu Calendar, Basanta Panchami falls on the fifth day of Magh Mass Sukla Paksha. And Saraswati Puja celebrates on the fifth day of Magh Maas Sukla Paksha.

या कुंदेंदु तुषारहार धवला, या शुभ्र वस्त्रावृता |

या वीणावर दण्डमंडितकरा, या श्वेतपद्मासना ||

या ब्रह्माच्युतशंकरप्रभ्रृतिभिर्देवै: सदा वन्दिता |

सा मां पातु सरस्वती भगवती नि:शेष्य जाड्यापहा ||

Saraswati Sloka

सरस्वती मया दृष्टा वीणापुस्तकधारिणी

हंसवाहनसंयुक्ता विद्यादानं करोतु मे

प्रथमं भारती नाम द्वितीयञ्च सरस्वती

तृतीयं शारदा देवी चतुर्थ हंसवाहिनी

पञ्चमं तु जगन्माता षष्ठं वागीश्वरी तथा

सप्तमं चैव कौमारी अष्टमं वरदायिनी

नवमं बुद्धिदात्री दशमं ब्रह्मचारिणी

एकादशं चन्द्रघण्टा द्वादशं भुवनेश्वरी

द्वादशै तानि नामानि त्रिसन्ध्यं पठेन्नरः

जिव्हाग्रे वसते तस्य ब्रह्मरूपा सरस्वती

What people do in Saraswati Puja

This is a very special day for students. They wake up early in the morning and take a bath. Then they collect the flowers, incense, and yellow colors, and first worship their books and copy. Even they buy the photos of goddess Saraswati and worship together with their learning materials.

After being done worshiping at home they go to the learning academy to pray together with the teachers and friends. All the school organizes Saraswati Puja and they celebrate with their all staff and students. In Kathmandu and other major cities, private boarding schools offer free admission for new students on the day of Saraswati Puja.

When the celebration finishes in school students will go to the Saraswati temple. In the temple also worship and request the god Saraswati to give them the power to overcome to learn new knowledge.

Where Saraswati Puja will celebrate in Kathmandu?

Start from every home, and then nearby Saraswati Temples, all the schools, and most famously in Swyambhu. In Swyambhu there is a Temple where all the students go with Chak and they write their names and most loved letters on the wall.
