It would serve the purpose. The whole point is to read or listen to a story or author’s thoughts while you experience wonders. Here are some recommendations:

1. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

Let’s get this straight. It is by far the best book to read while travelling or in general. Most of you must have heard about it, and most of you would have already read it. But we recommend rereading it on a journey. It’s a self-help book woven beautifully in disguise of a story. The character of Santiago, a shepherd boy, sets on a journey to find treasure. If you haven’t read it yet, we assure you that you won’t regret this masterpiece.

“Why do we have to listen to our hearts?” the boy asked.
“Because, wherever your heart is, that is where you will find your treasure.”

2. Shakespearean Literature

William Shakespeare is the Almighty idol for English literature students. His plays, poems, and several literary works indeed have a unique taste of emotions that were way ahead of their time. You can start with the sensual love story of Romeo Juliet or even the great king Julius Ceasar. When travelling to the UK, these books will get you varied sets of moods. There is a mix of emotions with every play, like love, hate, jealousy, and many more. You can also visit Shakespeare’s Birthplace in England, and it is well-maintained as a heritage.

“Travelers never did lie, though fools at home condemn them “.

3. The Diary of a Young girl by Anne Frank

This one is a bit on the emotional side, and you might even shed tears while reading this. The book got famous as it gave a vivid overview of a young Jewish girl in the tyranny of Nazi rule in Holland. For sure, the world has made concepts of wars, weapons, and many many things that don’t make sense to a girl so young. But sufferings and the attitude towards it which Anne frank possessed made this book a must-read.

“Inspite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart.”

4. Motorcycle’s Diary by Che Guevera

Che Guevera was a famous Marxist Revolutionary, and he was the face of the Cuban Revolution and had a heroic personality. He is a Comrade, remember to date, but the way you look at his picture will change once you read this book. That being said, the book is about his road trip to South America with his friend, and it is inspiring and humane in the true sense.

“I now know, by an almost fatalistic conformity with the facts, that my destiny is to travel.”

5. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

You understand your privilege when you acknowledge what you have and others don’t. Thus here is a piece that will leave you speechless. Khaled Hosseini’s Kite runner is a story of two boys in Afghanistan under Taliban rule. After getting acquainted with many Afghan authorities, you will taste the friendship, forgiveness and desire to be better as a person. It will make you cry and some cliffhanger moments which will stay with you on the journey.

“There are a lot of children in Afghanistan, but little childhood.”

6. Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer

On his Alaskan wilderness, Chris “Alex” McCandless is the character you will want to read and keep reading about when you take this book in your hands. The writing is in-detail, and the plot keeps you engaged. Travel is not some run away from reality; instead, it gets you closer to it. If you are done with your life and feel that vacation will set it straight, you might be the one like Chris. You will relate big time. You can also watch the movie. But a book is a book, fellas.

“The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.”

7. The Discovery of India by Jawaharlal Nehru

India is a vast and dynamic country with interwoven cultures, beliefs but under one democracy. Jawaharlal Nehru was an Indian Independence fighter, and he wrote this book from 1942 to 1946. It encompasses the ancient history, value system and different aspects of the country. It’s a must-read for every Indian and a best-read for everyone travelling to India.

“For only they can sense life who stand often on the verge of it, only they whose lives are not governed by the fear of death.”

8. Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler

This is a unique read when you travel to Europe or, more specifically, to Germany. The historical roots affect a nation’s present thought-process, and this you will recognize when you understand what kind of dictator Hitler indeed was. Mein Kampf is Hitler’s political manifesto and, by all means, the way to understand his personality.

“Reading is not an end in itself, but a means to an end. Its chief purpose is to help towards filling in the framework which is made up of the talents and capabilities that each individual possesses.”

9. The Shiva Trilogy by Amish Tripathi

It is a series of three books, The Immortals of Meluha, The secret of Nagas and the final The Oath of Vayuputras. Indian Mythology is one spot where one can find magic and a set of values together. But Amish Tripathi’s work is commendable as he portrays gods as humans in much earlier times. As if these people existed. The writing is so actual that you will imagine every scene taking place in front of your eyes. It’s miraculous how brilliant a human mind can envision a powerful story based on facts.

“People do what their society rewards them to do. If the society rewards trust, people will be trusting.”

10. The English by Michael Ondaatje

The novel was written in 1992. It covers themes like love, national identity, grief with four distinct characters brought together at an Italian villa during the Italian Campaign of World War II. It sets its scenes in Egypt with rich desert landscapes. All the romance of archaeological discoveries and the tense buildup to WWII make the story a romanticized one.

“I’ll be looking at the moon,
but I’ll be seeing you.”

As we end the list, we would like to mention that the best book you can read while travelling is the book you want, and it can even be Harry Potter. We expect you to read all the above recommendations as we know it will get you flavours of yourself you have never before.
