Villas Sol is located in Playa Hermosa in the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica. It is possible to book an all-inclusive resort stay here or rent a beautiful vacation Villa with a private plunge pool. 

We have stayed at this property multiple times and have a good overview of what to expect at this resort.

So let’s get to figuring out if Villas Sol beach resort is right for your next vacation and how you can perfectly plan your visit. 

Overview of Villas Sol

Villas Sol has a kind of unusual setup, so it is best to explain that to you first.

The property is divided between an all-inclusive resort and villas. These villas range in size and some have a private plunge pool. 

The thing that is unusual is that the villas are owned by private people who own these homes as either their full-time residences or as vacation rentals. 

If you stay in a villa it is sometimes possible to add on the all-inclusive option. However, even if you do not opt for all-inclusive, you can still access most of the resort amenities. 

The exception to this is if you book your villa directly through Villas Sol. The resort owns a few villas and it is always possible to add the all-inclusive option to those.

So, yea, a bit confusing.

Let’s now look at what you can expect from the all-inclusive resort and check out some great villas you can opt to rent for your vacation. 

Villas Sol All-Inclusive Resort

Here are all the amenities you can enjoy as part of the all-inclusive package.

Restaurants

There is one main restaurant on the property. Besides the restaurant, there are a few different snack areas and bars. Let’s go through all the eating and drinking options.

In addition to meals:

• non-alcoholic beverages

• national and international beers

• spirits

• a wide range of delicious cocktails

are all included as part of the food and drinks in the all-inclusive package.

Bahía Restaurant

Bahía Restaurant presents a buffet station filled with options for every palate.

Start your day with traditional Gallo pinto for breakfast, accompanied by exotic fruits and many other choices.

Lunchtime consists of an array of foods ranging from side dishes, meats, pasta, salads, and desserts. They aim to perfectly blend international and local dishes.

As night falls, Bahía Restaurant introduces you to a spectrum of global foods. Every night a special theme is chosen for the evening.

We like that the opening hours span from 6:30am until 10:00pm. Meaning, there is almost always something to eat.

In our opinion, the biggest downside is that all meals are buffet style. If you prefer a la carte menus, you won’t get that here.

Operating hours are as follows:

• Continental breakfast: 6:30 A.M. to 7:00 A.M.
• Breakfast buffet: 7:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M.
• Lunch: 12:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M.
• Coffee Time: 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M.
• Dinner: 6:00 P.M. to 10:00 P.M.

Wet Bar

Next to the main pool is a swim-up bar with a tiki style.

The Wet Bar serves a variety of cocktails and drinks you can enjoy either lounging on the poolside chairs, on the swim-up stools in the pool, or within the bar area.

The Wet Bar is open from 11:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M. every day.

Snack Bar

Right next to the wet bar, travelers will discover another perk of the all-inclusive system, the Snack Bar.

The Snack Bar offers a variety of options to get you through the day.

Whether you fancy a hamburger, hot dog, nachos, fries, pizza, or just some fresh fruit, you’ll find it all here.

It’s open from 11:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., so it’s perfect for that late breakfast or early afternoon snack.

Gaviotas Bar

For those looking to unwind with a refreshing cocktail in hand, Gaviota’s Bar is the place to be. Operating from 11:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M., it’s the perfect spot to enjoy both classic and contemporary cocktails.

We suggest hanging out here are getting a Pina Colada at sunset. You can enjoy amazing sunset views next to the bar and nothing screams “tropical vacation” like drinking a pina colada with an incredible sunset back drop.

Coffee Time

For all you coffee aficionados and sweet-toothed travelers, make sure you don’t miss out on ‘Coffee Time’ at our Bahía Restaurant.

Every afternoon, from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M., they serve locally sourced gourmet coffee and an exquisite selection of teas.

They also serve an array of cakes, sweet and savory breads that are just too good to pass up.

Bar Imperial

Bar Imperial is another great spot to get a drink and enjoy the Pacific coast views from above.

The bar is open from 11:00 A.M. to midnight, ready to make your day a bit more imperial!

Rooms

There are a variety of room options within the resort. These rooms are located within the main resort building and enjoy benefits such as daily cleaning service.

Garden View Room

The Garden View Room at the Villas Sol resort provides a serene retreat with a queen bed, a bathroom equipped with a rainfall showerhead, and a small balcony to soak in the garden views.

Among the many in-room amenities are a lofty duvet, free 30MB WiFi, a flat-screen TV with cable and satellite channels, a refrigerator, a coffee maker, air conditioning, a security box, and a hair dryer.

The room has a maximum capacity of two adults.

Garden View Family Room

The Garden View Family Room offers a refreshing and spacious accommodation option for up to four guests.

With its two king-sized beds and a balcony that overlooks the verdant surroundings, guests can enjoy the tropical charm of Playa Hermosa right from the comfort of their room.

Deluxe Room (2 Queen Bed)

The Deluxe Room with two Queen Beds and Ocean View at Villas Sol resort is a spacious and well-appointed choice for guests. This is a larger room that is equipped with two queen-size beds, a large closet, a desk area, chairs, and a bathroom featuring a rain shower, providing ample space for up to four adults.

The room’s large terrace/balcony offers stunning ocean views, further enhanced by the room’s sliding glass door.

Additional amenities include a flat-screen TV with cable and satellite channels, a refrigerator, a coffee maker, air conditioning, a security box, an iron, and an ironing board.

Deluxe Room (King Bed)

The Deluxe Room, King Bed with ocean view offers guests a luxurious and spacious stay with breathtaking views.

This is a large luxurious room that includes a plush king-size bed and a large balcony accessible via sliding glass doors that provide a side view of the ocean.

Among the other notable amenities are a rainfall showerhead in the bathroom, a refrigerator, a flat-screen TV with cable and satellite channels, and coffee makers. For your safety and convenience, a security box, iron, and hairdryer are also provided.

Beach Access

There is a free open-air shuttle that runs frequently from the beach up to Villas Sol.

However, in our experience is not the most helpful for most people staying in vacation rentals.

The shuttle goes up to the main resort building, but of you are renting a villa it is often faster to just walk.

Villas Sol Vacation Rentals

These villas are owned by private people that live here full-time or use the property as vacation rentals. 

We recently had a chance to stay at one of these properties and had a great time. We especially like this option for groups of friends or families. 

A few of our favorite options include:

3 BR/ 3 Bath Private Villa

Tucked away at the end of a cul-de-sac in the gated Villas Sol community, this 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom haven has enough space to comfortably sleep 6 guests. There is also a private terrace with a private plunge pool.

Without even needing to hop into your car, you have direct beach access to Playa Hermosa, along with the perks of the Villas Sol amenities. 

Common pools for a quick dip, restaurants for when you don’t feel like cooking, a wellness spa for some much-needed relaxation, and even the option to purchase all-inclusive packages at check-in.

In our opinion, the thing that makes this place stand out it the pool and terrace with insane views. Plus, the fact that it has 3 bathrooms is an added plus. None of the other places have 3 bathrooms.

Villa Sol 36

Villa Sol 36 is a modern villa that promises an unbeatable travel experience. This stunning accommodation comfortably sleeps 7 guests in 3 beautifully furnished bedrooms, with 2 well-equipped bathrooms. 

Enjoy the mesmerizing view of the ocean and mountains as you sip your morning coffee on the upgraded terrace. 

And when the day heats up, nothing beats a cool, refreshing dip in the private soaking pool. 

You can also unwind in the hammock with your favorite book, BBQ as the sun sets, or cook in the full kitchen with stainless steel appliances.

Villa Estrella

The villa houses a spacious living area, a fully upgraded kitchen, two bedrooms with king-size beds and a queen sleeper sofa in the living area. It can comfortably sleep 6 guests.

In our opinion, the tings that really makes this place stand out is the unique plunge pool with a glass side.

The downside is that this is a second floor villa with downstairs neighbors. So, you may have people staying directly below you and it could potentially be loud.

Villa Sol 30

Villa Sol 30 is a 2-bedroom villa that comfortably sleeps 4 guests in 2 bedrooms and features 1 bathroom. The villa boasts its own private pool, perfect for a refreshing dip after a day of exploration. 

For those who love cooking, the villa comes fully equipped with all the utensils you’ll need and dining tables inside and out to enjoy the stunning surrounding nature. 

The living area includes a master bedroom with a king-size bed, a second bedroom with a queen-size bed, and a freshly updated bathroom. As an added convenience, the villa also includes a washer and dryer within the unit. 

We really like the outside area here. The one downside is that the interior is a bit outdated.

Villa Sol 29

This is a 2-bedroom condo that comfortably sleeps 4 guests in two bedrooms, furnished with a king-size bed and a queen bed, respectively, and offers two bathrooms.

There is also a private plunge pool on the deck. 

This is the perfect spot if you would like privacy. The private pool area is closed off and provides seclusion. The downside to this is you have less of a view of the Pacific Coast.

Villa Sol 13

Welcome to Villa Sol 13, a premium holiday home. 

The apartment, fitted with air-conditioning, consists of three bedrooms and two clean bathrooms equipped with showers. Villa Sol 13 comfortably sleeps six guests across its bedrooms.

The well-fitted kitchen is complete with a stovetop, refrigerator, dishwasher, and an oven.

The villa’s balcony offers sweeping views of the surroundings as well as a private pool. Additional amenities include a washing machine, tea and coffee maker, and a TV with cable channels for your entertainment.

Hermosa Beach Villa

Looking for a slice of paradise in Playa Hermosa? This property boasts air-conditioned accommodation with your very own private pool. You also have a patio, balcony, and free private parking. Plus, the villa is Wi-Fi enabled.

The villa comes with a spacious living room and a flat-screen TV. It also features an equipped kitchen with a dishwasher and an oven. It can comfortably sleep six guests in three bedrooms with stunning sea views.

Note that this is a two floor villa.

Playa Hermosa Beach

One of the very best things about staying at Villas Sol is the easy access to Hermosa Beach.

The beach is perfect for swimming (there is a roped off swimming area), watching the sunset, fishing, renting jet skis, taking the kayaks out for a paddle, taking a long beach walk, or just relaxing and catching some sun.

The water is usually really calm here because it is somewhat of a cove. If swimming, just make sure that the blue flag is out, indicating that the water is safe on that day.

Also, keep an eye out for jet skiers. They are known to be a bit crazy around here. It is best to stay in the roped-off swimming area to ensure your safety.

Fun Things to Do Nearby

This area of Guanacaste is great to visit because there are tons of fun things to do nearby. You will never run out of things to do.

Some of our favorite activities are:

Go Beach Hopping

A few of our favorite beaches within a 20 minute drive include; Playa Panama (5 minutes north of Playa Hermosa), the beaches on Papagayo Peninsula (you can find out how to visit in our Papagayo Guide), and Playa Penca (just south of Playa Hermosa).

Check Out Playas del Coco

Playas del Coco is the most bustling beach town in the area. This is a good place to go if you would like to enjoy nightlife with live music, want to have more grocery shopping selections (head to Automercado to find all the food you could ever need), or want to try one of the many delicious restaurants. 

We think the beach at Playa Hermosa is nicer for the beach, but Coco is a better spot for more action. 

Take a Day Trip to Llanos de Cortez Waterfall

This is an impressive waterfall that you can hike to the top of and also swim under. It’s a great place for families and you could easily bring a picnic and spend several hours here. 

It will take about 45 minutes to drive to Llanos de Cortez Waterfall. Alternatively, if you will not have a rental car you can book a fun-filled day tour with transportation. 

Visit Rincon de la Vieja

Rincon de la Vieja is a volcano national park. This place is great for hiking, but is also known for being a fun adventure destination.

From Playa Hermosa, it is possible to arrange a fun day tour with several activities included.

Go Ziplining at Diamonte

Diamonte is an adventure park located about 45 minutes south of Playa Hermosa. It is a fun place for people of all ages.

We suggest booking the all-access day pass to really enjoy all that they have to offer. 

Just note that this activity does not include transportation. 

Go Scuba Diving

If you love diving, there are several reefs and tons of marine life in the waters surrounding Hermosa.

Go out with an experienced guide and find all the best spots.

Take a Longer Day Trip to Nearby Beach Towns

There are so many nice beach towns to check out within an hour drive of Playa Hermosa.

A few of our favorites are; Las Catalinas, Playa Flamingo, and Tamarindo.

You could easily visit all of these in one day.

We suggest making your way along the coast and stopping at each town as well as at any beaches you find.

Transportation to Villas Sol

The nearest airport is the Liberia International Airport which is located less than 30 minutes away from Villas Sol. 

The drive is very easy on main, well-maintained roads.

In our opinion, it is nice to have a rental car here. Mainly because there is a lot to do nearby. I will be sad if you just stay at the resort and don’t explore. 😉

Book your rental car through our favorite local company, Adobe and save 10% plus other perks

There is free parking at the resort and for all vacation rentals.

If you rather not rent a car, we suggest taking a taxi to Villas Sol. This will be the most affordable way to get here while also being comfortable. 

We suggest organizing your taxi ahead of time with our favorite registered Costa Rican taxi drivers. They are a group of brothers and their father from Liberia and they will take great care of you.

Our Opinion of Villa Sol

The all-inclusive option here is definitely more affordable than most of the all-inclusive resorts in Costa Rica. That being said, the quality reflects that. You have limited food options, limited amenities, and the rooms are somewhat outdated.

However, in our opinion, the location is great. You really can’t beat it for exploring this corner of the Guanacaste area.  And, if you are interested in all-inclsuive but are on a budget, you really can’t beat Villas Sol.

The last time we stayed at Villas Sol we were here for 5 nights and could have easily stayed another 5 nights and still not run out of fun things to do nearby.

I think that if you visit here, getting a private villa or apartment is the way to go. This is nice because you then have your own little private plunge pool to cool down in, but can still use the main pools if you want. You can cook your own meals or still opt to go out for dinner and pay if you want. 

The last time we were here we opted for a private villa with plunge pool that we shared with four of our friends. It was perfect!

We went up to the restaurant almost every night to drink a cocktail and watch the sunset and it was fine for us to pay with credit card for that. 

There are also a lot of great restaurants nearby that are worth checking out.

Conclusion: Villas Sol

In conclusion, Villas Sol all-inclusive resort located in Playa Hermosa is a good option for your next Costa Rica vacation.

The location can’t be beat, especially if you are planning to fly in and out of Liberia International Airport.

This resort is on the more budget end of the all-inclusive resorts in Costa Rica, but the vacation rental properties are also a good idea, especially if you are travelling with a family or larger group.
