Carnival
Staged in February each year, carnival parades take place in major provinces across the country every Sunday afternoon until the first Sunday in March, with celebrations held from 5pm until nightfall. Each area has its own distinctive carnival costumes and personalities based on local folklore traditions dating back centuries. The most popular carnival destinations in the Dominican Republic include Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata, La Vega and Santiago, although other unique celebrations are also staged in smaller towns such as Monte Cristi, Cotui and San Pedro de Macoris.
Independence Day
Celebrated on 27th February each year, the Dominican Republic’s Independence Day is marked with parades across the country. The largest takes place in Santo Domingo’s seafront Malecon, where an impressive two-hour military parade is staged in the afternoon, complete with rolling tanks, marching bands and helicopters swooping over the Caribbean sea. At sundown, visitors are treated to a spectacular fireworks display, followed by outdoor concerts featuring the Dominican Republic’s most celebrated merengue artists.
Espíritu Santo
Espíritu Santo is a celebration of the island’s African heritage that is staged in the first or second week of June. Festivities take place across the nation, although the most intriguing celebrations are generally held in the town of Villa Mella near Santo Domingo. Here, festivities are accompanied by traditional African music and instruments, including Congo drums.
Cabarete Kite Festival
Held each summer in July, the Dominican Republic’s weeklong Cabarete Kite Festival presents an opportunity for some of the world’s most talented kite-surfers to compete, showcasing their incredible skills on the windswept Atlantic Ocean just off Cabarete. Fans of the sport arrive from all over the world to mark the occasion, which is celebrated with numerous events throughout the week including parties and workshops.
Descubrimiento de América
On 12th October each year, Columbus’s discovery of America is celebrated in the Dominican Republic, with festivities reaching their peak with celebrations at Faro a Colón and the Cathedral of Santo Domingo, which is said to house the true and only bones of Christopher Columbus.
