1300-Year-Old Ancient Nalgonda Temple and Enigmatic Inscription Discovered in Telangana

Telangana in India boasts a rich cultural past. Although it is the youngest state of the country, its history dates back to more than a thousand years. The region has a unique culture, cuisine, festivals, and a lot more. Telangana attracts a lot of tourists for its mouth-watering food, vibrant shopping places, and historic monuments. And now the state has got a new addition to attract history buffs. An Ancient Nalgonda Temple was recently discovered during an archaeological expedition.

The expedition was led by two archaeologists of the Public Research Institute of History, Archaeology, and Heritage (PRIHAH). It has brought to light two extraordinary temples dating back 1300 years. Located adjacent to the Krishna river in Nalgonda district, Mudimanikyam village unveiled its long-forgotten treasures.

Time-Tested Relics

The team uncovered two temples, dating between 543 AD and 750 AD, standing as exceptional relics from the Badami Chalukyan rule. The uniqueness of the structures is that these are built in the Kadamba nagara style in the Rekha nagara format—an architectural rarity in Telangana. The structures at the Ancient Nalgonda temple stand as testimonies to the Badami Chalukyan period, awaiting minimal conservation and restoration work.

Enigmatic Label Inscription

An intriguing discovery accompanied the temples—a 1200-year-old label inscription, likely from the 8th or 9th Century AD. Etched with the term ‘Gandaloranru’ on a pillar within a cluster of five temples, its meaning remains elusive. According to a leading archeologist, the initial letters ‘Ganda’ in Kannada may signify ‘hero’.
