3 Unusual Things to do in Seattle for a Great Weekend

Seattle, the largest city in Washington State, is a curious amalgamation. It is a seaport city but also a cultural center with a big theatre and music scene. The city is also the headquarters of big companies – some global conglomerates such as Amazon, Microsoft, Starbucks etc. and others such as Costco, Nordstrom, and Alaska Airlines. People from across the world live and work in Seattle. There is a large Indian community in the city, mostly those who have been living in the city because they work in these afore-mentioned global companies. The city’s cultural vibes and nightlife are perfect for afterwork activities.

But the same old-same old outings can get boring after a while. If you have newly-arrived in the city or are looking for different activities then peruse the information in this article about unusual things to do in Seattle

How about foraging in a food forest? Then head to Beacon Food Forest.

Quite a change from eating takeaways or visiting cafés or restaurants; it can be refreshing to forage for fresh food in the forest.

Located in southeast Seattle neighborhood of Beacon Hill, this 7-acre land is brimming with fresh produce. It is a public permaculture garden and is designed in a way that the plants support each other’s mutual growth. Each category of plant is strategically positioned so that no species interferes with the others’ nutritional support. The public is free to come to the forest and forage from this community place. This aspect makes it quite unique as well. In most community gardens, only those who manage the garden, are allowed to harvest the produce. You can though contribute via volunteer work such as garden maintenance or organize community events. Those who have knowledge on botany, nutrition, or gardening can host events for the community. However, all are free to simply pickup berries and other fresh edibles and enjoy their outing.

Living in a big city, working for long hours in airconditioned environs, and hectic everyday life can take a toll on anyone. This foraging forest is one of the best places to visit if you are looking for unusual things to do in Seattle.

Need a fun place to burn of those calories? Then take the Howe Street Stairs.

Closed and airconditioned spaces such as gyms are not for everyone. Many people prefer to exercise out in the open – be it jogging in the city parks or stretches by the promenade. If you are looking for outdoor places to rejuvenate or get a workout then try the Howe Street Stairs.

With 388 steps, this is city’s longest staircase. Not too outrageous but at an elevation of 160 feet, you can get a good workout any day on these steps. On the way up, the place will treat you with a view of the Lake Union. And you will also get a glimpse of the Olympic Mountains at a distance. You will be traversing Capitol Hill when you are climbing up and down the steps.

At the end of the climb or a solid workout, you can relax at the top and admire the city’s view you call home – whether permanent or transitory. This activity can be one of the most unusual things to do in Seattle.

Love board games? Then visit the Mox Boarding House.

Board games can be reminiscent of childhood but indulging in them is always gold. If you are looking for new outing ideas then try Mox Boarding House.

It’s a bustling place where you can order and play any number of games. But that’s not the unusual thing about it. Its name is derived from a game, which was invented in Seattle – Magic: The Gathering. Adjoining it is a gaming emporium called the Card Kingdom. The owners of both these places are brothers and you can go browse thousands of games before or after your meal. The place itself is decorated with the brothers’ favorite gaming characters. In its gaming room, you can also participate in tournaments with at least 50 other people. If you like playing and eating at the same time then this café is right up your alley.

This place is also ideal for those who love craft beers. The café serves comfort food, which you can pair with a great variety of beers available at the café/full-service bar. Even if you decide not to play, the servers and others at the diner will persuade you to do so. And you might actually go along with it. Gaming and food and board games – quite a combination for a different experience around town. Visit the Mox Boarding House if you are up for unusual things to do in Seattle.

Those who are from other countries and living in the city may find these activities refreshing. Visiting these places, which are not the usual touristry things or the usual activities around town, can be a good way to meet new people.
