Garden of Dreams: Place to visit in Kathmandu

Garden of Dreams is a go-to destination for people visiting Nepal for the first time. It was built around 1920 in Kaiser Mahal in Kathmandu. It represents peace and tranquility among the visitors.

The design hovers around a neo-classical theme. It is one of the most admired and modern pieces of work at the time.

Theme

Talking about the theme, the garden of dreams is extended to 6,895 m2. Also, the designer of the garden is Kishore Narshingh. 

Though it is a classical theme garden; you can experience six different seasons on six pavilions. You can see variants of floras. Apart from it, you can view pavilions, an amphitheater, ponds, pergolas, and urns.

Inspiration

The history and making of the garden all started from an inspiration from Edwardian style. Feature such as verandas, pergolas, balustrades, urns, and birdhouses represents  European style.

It was a private garden but then it was handed to the Nepal government. Now, it is open to the public. 

Entrance Fee

For an international traveler, the fee costs around $2-$4 or NPR 200-400. But for locals, the Entrance Fee costs only NPR 100. Moreover, The price may vary accordingly.

Opening Hours

Garden of Dreams is open from 9 am to 10 pm on daily basis. You can even spend your whole day there once you have entered.

Food

After you plan to spend your day reading books or just relaxing by yourself will need to make your tummy happy as well.

There are variant-style restaurants opening inside the garden, you can simply order the one you are craving for. Moreover, the food may cost you a little more or as same from outside.

Internet

For the internet facility, you can just buy it at Rs 50 per hour.

Renovation

The garden was unseen until 2000 to 2007 when the Austrian government took on the initiative to restore the paths, flora, pavilions. The process was further supported by the Nepal Ministry of Education and implemented by Eco Himal.

The restoration was done but sadly could only make it to half of the original remains. 

How to get around Garden of Dreams

If you are staying somewhere in Thamel then you can get around the garden of dreams on foot. It will be just walking away from your accommodation.

If you are a little far you can always hire a taxi, cab, or even motorbikes which drive you way along in Garden of Dreams.

You can also get a rickshaw to be there. In addition, the garden is just next to Kaiser Library. You can even ask a local or follow Google Maps if you get confused.
