Mount Toubkal Via the High Atlas Valleys of Morocco

Mount Toubkal Via the High Atlas Valleys of Morocco

The High Atlas Mountains have a spectacular setting in valleys with greenery surrounding them, the mountains rising above, and rivers rushing through. The untamed land is unlike any other, but you will want to take a tour operator with you to explore the region.

One Morocco tour option you have takes you from Imi Ourlad to Lepiney, up Jbel Toubkal and through the Imnan Valley. When trekking Morocco you have an option of short excursions or many nights spent out in the beautiful landscape. This option is an eight day trek with seven nights. Each day trekking will be 4 to 6 hours until the 6th day, where you will hike for 8 to 9 hours. Driving time to the start of the trek is a round trip of 3 hours.

The Morocco itinerary takes you from Marrakesh to Imi Ourlad. From there you will hike to Tizi Ntacht which is 2200 Meters above sea level. After breaking for lunch, the trip continues to Imi Nifri where you will spend the night at Tezian guest house.

The next day your High Atlas trekking will take you to Tizi Ntawtilte at 2400 meters and on to Asakka, Azib Issllan, and a night in a Thkent home. During your Morocco tour you will find many homes are open to you as a visitor of the region. The homes are made of the sandy clay and other natural elements of the country. Most of the Berber villages you will come across at higher elevations are without power or modern technology. This culture lives off the land.

The third day takes you to Azib Assouli and on to Tizi Ntagdalt at 3000 meters. The trip ends at Tizi Oussem. Each day you will climb higher in elevation. The fourth night is spent at the Lepiney refuge at 3100 meters before you move on the next day to 3950 meters at the Tizi Aguelzim. At the end of the day you will have reached the Jbel Toubkal Refuge at 3200 meters.

Day six is the hardest day because you will be trekking the Jbel Toubkal summit. The summit lies at 4167 meters. It is the highest peak in Morocco. Since there is nowhere to stay at the summit you will hike back down to Armed at 2000 meters for the evening. The hardest part of the trek is up to the summit. The next two days will be downhill and a bit less enduring. To take a Morocco holiday with a hike to the summit you need to be conditioned for the trek. It will require endurance throughout the entire way, as some areas of the hike can be difficult when the path narrows or you hike uphill all day. The reward is worth the hard work!

Morocco had always been a country I was curious about. It’s blend of North African and Arabic influences gave it this air of mystique that drew me in. Plus, you know, I like couscous. So I had high expectations when I decided to pop over from Spain and explore the country for three weeks.
